It had been a fucking long day. My brothers had been down my throat about the split of our control in the city yet again. Being the youngest son of the old mob boss, Finneas, I had always had a lot to prove. My older brothers Lorcan and Killian had always been my father’s pride and joy. When dad died, we’d split the job of controlling the empire in Ireland. I had gotten the docks, guns and protection of businesses loyal to my father. It was me that put my boots through the glass windows when they didn’t pay on time. It was me who had to prove more than my older brothers because they had been raised to take over, whereas I had been the baby. The one they didn’t think could handle my shit. But they had been wrong. Within a few months I had taken control of my part of Ireland and now no one disrespected me. But I also didn’t give in to my brothers’ demands to know every little thing about my side of the business. I downed the rest of my drink and poured myself another. The door to my office burst open and my boys Jye and Marcus walked in. They dropped the bag full of protection money on the desk, but I could already tell it wasn’t everything. “That looks light.” “It is, by about four grand.” I looked up at Jye, downing my drink quickly, the burn of the whiskey warming me, before I got up. “What the fuck happened?” Marcus came forward. “There appears to be a rebellion rising against you and your brothers. As far as I can see, it’s started with Paul O’Reilly and has gathered steam with Peter Kennedy.” I knew Peter, he was a weakling and would never lead anyone to doing something to piss me off. He had owed his life to my father once upon a time. Paul had to be the real leader. I hated that fucking guy. He had butted heads with our family for as long as I could remember. A feud that went down the generations from the start and carried through to me and Paul’s sons now. “Come on,” I said to them. “We’re going to pay him a little visit.” Jye and Marcus followed me out of the office and toward my car. I got in behind the wheel and sped us down the streets of Galway toward the shop I knew the Kennedy’s had run for decades. They were situated near the bay and were some of the oldest shops in the city. Jye pulled our guns out from under the seat and loaded them. As I pulled up outside their shops, I saw the light on in Peter’s convenience shop. Jye handed me my gun and I put it into my belt, under my jacket. I made a move to open the door but it was locked. Marcus smashed his leg through the glass and unlocked it from the inside. Paul and Peter came running out, only to back up when they saw me. Peter looked like a kid with his hand caught in the cookie jar. He was defiant, and I knew instantly he would be the reason I lost my cool and shot up the shops we were supposed to protect. Fuck me, he reminded me of the old school professor that I hated. “I’m here for my money,” I said, looking over at the two of them. “I’ve heard you are but a few refusing to pay this week.” “We’re sick of you and your demands for money” Paul spat viciously. “We’re not paying.” “Oh really?” I aimed at him, as he approached me. He stayed well enough away that I couldn’t reach him, but I could see he was trying to keep a solid foot away from me. I had to give him props, not many dared to defy me or my brothers. “Now get out,” Paul said. Peter still hadn’t said a thing to me. I looked over at him, cowering behind his counter. “I don’t think so,” I said. “When I came to you and told you what I could protect you from, you eagerly agreed to pay me weekly for our services.
