She grew up in flyover country, and despite the Concilio’s rules against shapeshifters playing organized sports with humans, she played high-school basketball in her small town without getting caught. However, a college scout turned her in, and now she’s owned by the Concilio, trained as a pleasure slave. Daniel hitches a ride to Italy with a friend to attend an auction, and he returns home with a statuesque gazelle who was aiming for an applied physics degree on a basketball scholarship. She’s intelligent enough she doesn’t annoy him simply by opening her mouth, and sturdy enough to withstand the things he plans to do to her. It isn’t the ogre part of Daniel’s personality that’s needed toning down over the centuries, but his inner Viking. Razing and pillaging, indeed. Chapter One Mariah didn’t know what was happening, and slaves were never to ask questions. A well-behaved slave only spoke when spoken to, unless directed to deliver a message. She stood passively while her handler locked leg irons with a chain between them onto her ankles. Next came a wide steel band around her waist, with wrist cuffs chained to the sides. She stood in line with the other slaves, and they were walked to a bus in a huge garage. She couldn’t remember arriving at this place. Was this how she’d been brought? Mariah had vague memories of her life before. She knew she’d had parents, but she couldn’t remember anything about them. She occasionally remembered learning something in school, but couldn’t remember teachers or classmates. Trying to remember made her brain hurt, so she stopped trying. How long since she’d been someone else? Months? A year? She didn’t know that, either. Was she still eighteen? Or had she missed a birthday and turned nineteen without knowing it? She knew she hadn’t always been a slave, but she couldn’t remember not being one. It didn’t make sense, but thinking about it gave her a headache, and it made sense to do the vaginal exercises her trainers wanted her to do while waiting to be escorted from one class to another, rather than think. But this was more than being moved between classes, or from classes to her bunk. They were taking her somewhere else entirely. The windows of the bus had been painted so no one could see in or out. A black cloth hung behind the bus driver, so the slaves couldn’t see outside that way, either. Mariah didn’t think they’d traveled far, perhaps twenty minutes, when she heard what she was certain was an airplane. It was odd that she knew what an airplane was, and what they sounded like, but she didn’t know what her name had been before it was Mariah. For that matter, it was odd she knew it hadn’t always been her name. The bus was driven up a ramp, and Mariah assumed they were on the plane, still inside the bus. Were she and the other slaves being taken somewhere to be sold? Was she finally going to be bought by someone? Her very own person to pleasure? Would he be kind, or cruel? She’d been trained for either possibility. She’d also been trained to pleasure both men and women, but she’d mostly failed when it came to pleasuring women.
