I was tired of arguing with my daughter about a man, a WEREWOLF, no less. Absolute scum, in my opinion, and my Emmeline had to go and fall in love with one. And not just any werewolf—she's head over heels for the alpha Marcus. The beast will surely break her heart, and then I'll have to pick up the pieces. I forbid it! Then Emmeline decides to run away with Marcus and his pack... But tragedy strikes, and my Emmeline pays the ultimate price. I can promise this: The werewolves WILL pay... https://ssbks.com/CMPrequel PROLOGUE Ember “We should’ve never gotten involved with this.” Alpha Radolph paced about the room, speaking more to himself than the others. Cassian sat behind his desk, a deep frown that wouldn’t seem to end. Not after what happened to Elder Silas from the Ash Hounds. After we’d managed to calm everyone down, we headed to Cassian’s office to speak in private. Alpha Radolph, Cove, Thoran, and Rohan stood on one side of the room, while Emily, Griffin, and I stood on the other side. Divided. We’d finally grown close to another pack, only to be pushed away. “We need to leave,” Alpha Radolph said, a determination in his tone laced with contempt and sadness. Cassian shook his head. “You can’t. It’s nearly midnight. We need to lock up before the change.” “We have chains in the truck,” he answered, reaching for the door. Emily stepped forward, the calming voice of reassurance. “Wait, please don’t go. We need to stick together now more than ever.” “No!” he snapped. It was the first time any of us had seen him so angry. The boom from his voice was jarring enough to make Emily jump back. “We need to leave and get back to our pack.” The door swung open, but he paused, turning back to face us. His voice softened as he said, “I won’t turn the other packs away from you, but we’re through with our alliance. I need to protect my pack now, and that means staying away from the threat of Samara.” He motioned to his pack and said, “Let’s go.” Thoran didn’t waste a second following his alpha. But Rohan and Cove remained rooted to their spots. Alpha Radolph waited, his impatience growing to an unstable level. Though he appeared calm from the outside, I could see his red aura burning brighter, furious and untamed. Finally, with a scowl on his face, he barked out, “You coming?” Cove jumped but didn’t move. Rohan took a step forward but wouldn’t leave the room. “We need to stick together. We can’t leave,” he said, his voice low—what some would mistake as being intimidated, though I could see that he wasn’t feeling threatened in the least. In fact, his aura was alive and assertive. Maybe he didn’t want to upset his alpha any further. Being a beta, he knew his alpha’s true emotions, even when they were hidden. “The hell you mean we can’t?” Alpha Radolph let out an irritated scoff. “We’re leaving now. And if you don’t join me, then you might as well not bother coming back. Choose your side.” “No,” Cove said, her timid voice lacking the confidence needed to confront her alpha. “Rohan is right, we can’t leave. If we leave now, we’re only giving her more power. You might think that’s not our problem, but it will be when she comes for our pack next. And don’t assume she isn’t already thinking of her plot against us.” Alpha Radolph took three steps toward Cove. “I don’t give a rat’s ass about what she—or anyone else—thinks. My only concern is keeping my pack safe, and I refuse to lose any more good men because of some crazy witch! So let them deal with her. I need to bury our elder.” He turned away again, stomping out the door, shouting, “You coming? Because anyone who stays is no longer welcome in the Ash Hounds pack.” Cove barely tipped her head up to face him with a heavy look of sorrow. She shook her head, her feet planted to the ground. “No. I won’t abandon them when they need us the most. That’s not who I am. It’s not who we are, Radolph!” His eyes narrowed, and he shook his head, turning away. Thoran spat out, “Traitor,” before he left, following his alpha down the stairs and to their truck. Rohan turned to follow Alpha Radolph reluctantly, but not before moving over to Cove. She’d gripped the sleeve of his shirt, begging him to stay. The torn
