English translation of Nessun Dorma, from the opera Turandot by Puccini CHAPTER ONE“What did I do?” I turned in a slow circle, taking in the carnage around me. Blood drenched the floor, sticky against my bare feet. I looked at my hands, covered with viscous crimson gore that was already turning to dried, brown flakes on my pale skin. Blood covered not only my hands but my bare arms as well, and the black shirt and shorts I wore were soaked through. In one hand, I held a large knife, and in the other, a piece of wood with a jagged end that looked like it might have been a table leg at some point. I was detached, breathing calmly as I looked around at the devastation I had apparently caused. Panic and terror lingered in the back of my mind, tempting me to scream and lose it completely. A switch flipped somewhere deep inside me, imbuing an unnatural calmness which wrapped around me like a blanket, and I stepped back, trying to analyze the situation.I was in a room without windows. There was one door and no other exit I could see. The walls were bare peeling plaster, with dark stains halfway up the walls. Mold maybe. The men who lay scattered around the floor looked rough. They were dirty, stinky, and human. Blood spatter covered the walls and floor, and there wasn’t a single sound. I had killed them all, and I didn’t remember why. I killed them all. I killed them all. I... No, get it together, keep it together. It must have been self-defense. I need to get out of here.I placed the piece of wood on a nearby table but kept the knife in my hand just in case there were more of them. My mind danced around the worst possible scenarios. I had no idea where I was, why I was here, or who I was. Everything up until this moment was blank. Panic rose again, and I shut it down hard. Panic wouldn’t help me. Clearly, I had been in enough danger that I had to take human lives to protect myself. Or maybe you’re the dangerous one and they are innocent. I pushed that thought away and took a deep breath. The metallic taste of blood filled my mouth, and I reached up to my face. It was covered with blood too. Panic rose, and I scrubbed hard at my mouth with the back of my hand, but it didn’t do much good. I swallowed, trying to breathe slower.Keeping the knife at the ready, I searched the bodies of the men I killed. There were four of them, and they each bore several nasty wounds. I hadn’t held back apparently. My stomach lurched at the thought. What did I do? How could I have done this? Why? Unless it wasn’t me. That made sense. I was being set up. There was no way I could take on four large men, except a sly sensation deep down told me it would be child’s play. No. Concentrate. Find something to tell you where or who you are.Trying to avoid as much of the mess as I could, I went through pockets, but there was very
