Don’t Leave Me Eden Emory Prologue My first ever heartbreak was when I saw my mother get beaten. Back then, I had thought we were having the best day of our lives. Mother, Father, and I had gone out to my favorite diner for breakfast, and I had blueberry pancakes topped with an obscene amount of whipped cream and enough syrup to make my teeth ache. At the time, I didn’t notice my mother’s hands shaking as she cut my pancakes. I also didn’t notice the way my father had been drinking at nine that morning and began to glare at my mom with a hatred that would become ingrained in my mind for years to come. I had thought that it had happened suddenly. After a full day’s schedule of eating until my stomach was bursting and playing in the water of the beach, we decided to head home. I was exhausted by that time and hadn’t noticed my father’s mood. We were in the car in the middle of our journey when it happened. My father, as always, was in the driver’s seat. He swerved over to the side of the road and began wailing on my mother like she was the one endangering him. I was only seven when it happened, so that first time, I just sat there frozen in my seat as my mother cried out for him to stop. When it was done, I was still shell-shocked and had to watch my mother pull herself together as my dad drove the rest of the way home in silence. I never looked at my father the same way again. Once I got older, I made sure that he would never put a hand on her again. Permanently. I guess that is why I ended up in the situation I did. It had been years since my father had fallen asleep on our couch with the burner on and our house went up in flames. Our lives had changed dramatically since then, but I couldn’t say that I missed him or the life we once had. After that, we moved to a small city outside of Philadelphia, and it was the first time my mom had taken us to a “friend’s” house for dinner. That house would later be the one I moved into. It was a three-bedroom house with a backyard just big enough for a small pool and a chair for my mother to sit and sunbathe. I would remember how content she looked whenever she lay out there and I couldn’t help but feel happy for her. A woman who was run by fear, now able to fully relax, was something I don’t think people gave her enough credit for. The wood floors creaked
