I stomped across the lawn back to the main house, and as far away from the cottage as I could get. Not that distance would help. What I saw there was already tattooed on my brain. My wife and my friend naked in bed—what a fucking cliché. Worst part was that now I couldn’t unsee any of it. And the more I saw them kissing and fucking, in my head, the more I realized this had been going on for a long while, possibly even before we got married. Why would she do this? Was all this not enough? I slowed down to take in the scenery in front of me—the Olympic-size pool, the Andalusian-style mansion, and acres and acres of the Sonoran Desert behind me. “Derek, you’re overreacting.” Her small hand on my shoulder felt like cinders burning through my shirt. I jerked away from her hold and turned to face her. That was a mistake. The last thing I needed to see was my soon-to-be ex-wife wrapped in a white sheet, seemingly naked. She gathered the excess fabric around her chest and stood taller, as if to say she had nothing to hide or to be ashamed of, as if she didn’t care how crushed I felt, or how fucked up this situation was. “Am I?” I stalked toward her, and she had the decency to step back with horror in her eyes. I’d seen her without clothes so many times. But I’d never seen her for what she really was. Because, even now, when she knew she’d messed up, I didn’t see an ounce of regret in her eyes, not even love or hate. “Was this your plan all along?” I pointed toward the cottage at the far end of the backyard. The small house I built for her, so she could work on her art. “Were you fucking Jacob before you brought him into my company?” “Your company?” She furrowed her brows at me. Now she was angry. “Our company. I helped you build CCI from the ground up. It’s mine, just as much as it is yours.” “Cole Communications is yours? I’m fucking Derek Cole.
