Mayday. Mayday.” “This is helicopter 4-3-5-Marcus Falco out of Fools Gold, Colorado. We’re headed north northeast to Greeley and experiencing mechanical difficulties. I have three passengers on board, and one of the passengers is in distress. I suspect a cardiac event.” “We’re landing North of Denver at latitude 40.039545 and longitude 104.926453. Please send an air ambulance for transport to North Colorado Medical Center in Greeley. Over.” Static came over the line as his chopper blades slowed and smoke clouded the front shield. No response came over the line. He glanced over at one of his passengers, Charli Jackson, sitting in the co-pilot’s seat. She was watching him closely worry in her blue eyes as she bit her bottom lip. “Mayday. Mayday. Mayday.” “This is 5-Marcus Falco. We’re going down now. Do you read me?” “Marcus!” Charli screamed. “Charli!” Melanie Jackson called from the backseat. “Oh my God, Gran!” CHAPTER 1 Two weeks later… Marcus wiped his greasy hands on an old rag and stepped back from the wrecked helicopter, perplexed from what he was seeing. There was no reason he could find for the malfunctions that caused the technical difficulties leading to the crash-landing when he flew Charli Jackson, her cousin Melanie, and their grandmother to Greeley for her medical appointment. Unfortunately, Ester Jackson had passed away from a cardiac episode before the air ambulance had arrived. The rest of them had been flown to Longmont United Hospital to be checked out. To make matters worse, in his opinion, he’d walked away without a scratch on him while Charli suffered from a sprained wrist, and Melanie a concussion. He didn’t understand what went wrong. He kept his bird in top shape and never would have offered to assist in getting Ester to her cardiologist appointment when Charli mentioned the long car ride to Greeley and back put a strain on her grandmother’s health. And now the sweet woman was gone. All because of him. He kicked an empty tin can across the dirt floor of the shed where he kept his helicopter on their ranch. “Marcus, you got company,” one of his older brothers, Troy called, walking toward him. “I’m in no mood to see anyone,” he replied. “If it’s another insurance claims adjuster, tell him to come back later. I’ve talked to enough people about the crash to fill a book.” “Yeah, well, it’s not. And, I think you’re going to have to talk to her about the crash whether you like it or not,” Troy said. “It’s time, baby brother.” Marcus groaned and walked out of the shed to see Charli leaning against her motorcycle, glaring at him. Her sprained wrist wrapped in an ACE bandage. He’d been so engrossed in working on his chopper that he hadn’t even heard her riding down the drive to the Paradise. This was the last thing he wanted. He’d been trying to avoid her since the accident, because
