I’m exhausted because of my… stepfather? I don’t really know what he is technically, but I just call him Rhett. He was only married to my mother for one whole day before she bailed and left all of us behind. He’s a fit thirty-eight, which is annoying sometimes when he finds projects on the property for us to work on. He had me and his real daughter, Harlow, working outside with him all day and I’m absolutely exhausted. Harlow has a twin sister, Haley, but she would rather take whatever punishment Rhett doles out than sweat or risk breaking a nail. The older we get, the more he doesn’t seem to care, and I suppose that’s because Haley causes so much of a ruckus when she doesn’t get her way that no one can have a decent time. To be honest, the noise that ripped me out of my dream is probably Grey, if I had to guess. If Rhett is my stepfather, then that makes Grey my unwitting stepbrother. He has one speed. Stomping. He sounds like a herd of elephants when he’s pissed off, which is more often than not. He has a general distaste for… everything. Especially me. I can see his skin crawl when someone refers to me as his sister. I used to take offense to that because we grew up just like brother and sister, but now I just make it my mission to agitate him whenever possible. He’s always been a bit of an ass, but in the last couple of years, he’s had a hard time hiding how much I bother him. He barely speaks to me, and when he does, I can feel the anger radiating off of his body and rippling into mine. He wants to control where I go and what I do, which makes me want to do whatever it is he’s trying to stop me from doing. He’s one of the Ravens of Hollow Hill, so he’s used to everyone bowing down and praising his existence. He can’t touch me, though, and neither can any of the other Ravens. The Ravens don’t have many rules, but that’s one of them. They have to look out for any female family members who haven’t betrayed them. They think it means that they own us, but we use it as a license to torment the fuck out of them. Stupidly, Grey’s undeterred attention and barely hinged frustration with me makes my body flush and warm all over just thinking about it. I’m just a pest that he’s forced to protect and look after, but he has no idea what I really think of him. I don’t even know what I truly think of him. I just know that Grey Bishop is on my mind often, even when he’s calling me his little nightmare. Rhett and my mom started dating when I was only eight-years-old, it was a whirlwind kind of thing. They met in the summer, and shortly before the big snow came, they got married at the courthouse and by the next day she fell back into her old ways, leaving all of us behind. We get one massive snow every year that keeps everyone in their homes for several months until the weather breaks. That year she slipped out in the middle of the night, and I spent those four months snowed in with a man I didn't know, a new brother who couldn't stand the sight of me, and no mom to protect me. Harlow has always been kind to me and accepted me as her new sister right away, and Haley and I grew to understand each other over the years. I think Harlow likes having me around mostly because Rhett is so protective of her, which means she’s at home and bored most of the time. I think she likes that I’m not afraid to tell Grey to go touch grass. I was young, but I was aware that my mother had pissed off Rhett by leaving, and I worried that he was going to kick me out into the blizzard. She’d dated a lot of men before Rhett, and none of them were kind. Rhett has never been mean to me, but he’s not one to offer anything comforting and he never attempted to look for my mother.
