He seemed sure of himself as he strode along, his steps confident and smooth, but his eyes were unfocused. His mind, a storm of pain and sadness, escaping down random tracks of thought while trying to avoid the bitter truth of what he'd just witnessed in that bedroom. Braden grew up in these woods and knew them inside and out. Though his feet carried him forward into the forest's shadowy depths, his eyes noticed little of his surroundings. Trying hard to escape the one inescapable fact. His life was over and all he had worked so hard to build lay shattered along with his hopes and dreams. That truth revealed a few hours before, when he'd arrived home early and found his best friend's car parked in the driveway. Entering the house, following the sounds of lovemaking to see his new bride in bed with the man. Her first reaction had been anger, not shame or guilt. That fact would always stick with Braden. The anger and indignation on his wife's face and the look of pure shame on his friends. How could he go back home now? How do you survive a shattered and broken life? Feeling a chill in the air, Braden dragged himself from the dark thoughts. The fog of sadness and pain fading somewhat, replaced with concern, when he realized how far he had wandered. Twilight was fast approaching, and the deepening shadows closing in. Getting his bearings, Braden turned down a trail, heading back home. Just then, there was a loud, static sounding explosion deep in the woods, off the path to his right. Curiosity drew him into the trees, towards the sound. As he approached, the popping of electricity grew louder, and he slowed, wary of being shocked. Walking cautiously around the base of a great redwood tree, Braden froze; stunned upon seeing a purple circle of swirling energy, red sparks discharging from it. The disk twisted and warped in ways that hurt his eyes to watch, but what drew his gaze further still was the pair of slim green legs, mangled and bloody, that stuck out near the bottom — seemingly hovering in space and hanging down to the ground, twitching in pain. ---------- Druska was dying. Gasping out her last breaths and cursing the vagaries of physics. Her body trapped halfway through a faulting displacement portal, the Great Algorithm only knew where. Most likely some backwater planet its scrambled logic units had found. The rest of her body was trapped in no-space, in broken mathematical loops. She lay there, reflecting on how she'd ended up in this situation. Her scouting mission had been a success until that point. This planet was rich in organic and mineral wealth, with oddities and wonders that would make even a Member of the Board salivate. On her flight around the planet, cloaked in stealth mode, her scanner detected dozens of different races of sentient life, scattered and spread throughout the world. Such a variety as no other scout had ever discovered. The scanners even found that many were living deep within the crust of the world. None of them, thankfully, appeared capable of significant defense. There were many small pocket civilizations of stone and wood construction. What she could discern of the local's technology, from her initial pass, was rudimentary. Transportation was mostly by foot, with some using four-legged beasts of one variety or another to either ride or drag their goods. They discovered the wheel at least, Druska thought to herself wryly, how do the
