But navigating the hairy switchbacks in the middle of the night with extreme sleep deprivation was downright stupid. I had no choice. My flight was leaving for Budapest in hours. The Hungarian city was one of the few European destinations I’d yet to visit. Of course, this was far from a tourist trek. Some presently unknown schmo was about to get whacked by yours truly, and I sure hoped he'd be deserving of the honor. All the faces of those I’d killed over the previous weeks flooded my mind. I considered walking away from this whole assignment and telling Belochkin to screw off, but I knew it wouldn’t end there. There was more to these assassin assignments I was being given. It went deeper than just the Russian enigma. I planned on finding out exactly how deep, and I wouldn’t return from Europe until I did. It was a moonless night, and I hadn’t seen a car on the high mountain roads in a good fifteen minutes. My eyes were playing tricks on me, and my cell coverage went out forty miles back. I did my best to stay awake, widening my eyes to double their normal size, rolling all four windows down, and even slapping my cheeks a few times. I was still nursing the twenty-ounce coffee I’d bought at the gas station an hour ago. Nothing worse than sipping the remnants of burnt coffee with a bunch of grounds getting stuck in your teeth. Actually, there was something worse, and that was cold coffee spilling on your pants while trying to navigate a hairpin turn. It didn’t end well. I looked down at the coffee and up at the road, but it was too late. The brakes locked, and the car didn’t respond to my last-second turn to the right. When it was all said and done, I was hanging upside down with the rear of the car dangling off the cliffside. I carefully distributed my weight to the front of the car and clenched my lips tight as I unbuckled and fell headfirst onto the driver seat. I was surprised to feel no pain. I held my breath and grabbed my rucksack from the back seat where I’d left it, then opened the door and jumped out into the dark, cold mountain night. Without the headlights shining into the night, the blackness was eerie. I slung the bag over my right shoulder and began the long journey to Nashville. I had no clue where I was going, but it didn’t really matter. Without a ride, I wasn’t even going to make it down the mountain, let alone to Nashville. I walked a little over a mile, shivering while I made my way through the night. Suddenly a blinding light pierced through the dark. I stood off to the side of the road and waved incessantly as a jeep slowly approached. A beautiful blonde-haired, petite woman rolled her window down. She raised her right eyebrow, further revealing her gorgeous crystal blue eyes. “You must be freezing.” She pointed backward with her thumb. “I’m assuming that’s your car hanging off the cliff?” Between my teeth chattering in the bitter cold and standing shocked at her presence, I struggled to find any words. She leaned over and opened the passenger door. “Hop in.” I didn’t have to be told twice. The Jeep was toasty, and I held my hands an inch from the dashboard vents. “Thanks for picking me up. I’m headed toward Nashville, but anything close would be appreciated.” She smiled wide, exposing yet another bit of physical perfection in her dazzling white teeth. “That’s where I’m headed.” She glanced at the dashboard clock. “Should be there by six.” “Perfect.” I didn’t want to appear rude but had to address the elephant in the room. “If you don’t mind me asking, what are you doing out here at this hour? And why would you pick up a total stranger?” She shrugged. “I’m on my way to the Nashville airport, and there’s no other way to get there from here. I picked you up because you seem to be in a pretty desperate situation. No offense.” “None taken.” I chuckled, and she did the same. “How lucky am I? Rescued by the most gorgeous woman in Tennessee.” “I bet you say that to all the women who pick you up in the middle of the night.” “Busted!” I laughed again. “Seriously,
