What we loathe, we graft into our very soul. - Mary Renault, The Mask of Apollo Fitz 1 “If I tell him that he’ll probably assume you’re indoctrinating me into some sort of BDSM thing,” Luka said playfully. I was beginning to notice Playful Luka coming out when the wall he instinctively threw up, between himself and anyone who reminded him of his father, was at its thinnest. It was a sign of him being comfortable. Trusting, even. I couldn’t tell if he was becoming more comfortable with the idea of marrying me or if talking about his best friend was the reason this side of him was showing itself. “Let him assume whatever he wants,” I told Luka. “All I care about is him being on a strictly need-to-know basis when it comes to our relationship. And that goes for the rest of your friends too.” “I could live with that.” Luka should have sounded conflicted still, but he sounded like someone who had already decided what he wanted and was at peace with it. He stood right next to me, meeting my raw, unguarded gaze. I wanted to search for some hint of surrender in his eyes, but I had to look away from his gorgeous face and turn my head. I didn’t want him to look back at me and spot the tightness taking over, in my shoulders, neck, and jaw. My heart felt as if it was deciding whether to take another beat or its last, like it would stop dead if he turned down my marriage-of-convenience proposal and walked away. Like it had to beat, at least partially, for Luka Decker now. Like it couldn’t stand going back to Morgan Fitzgerald being its sole master. I couldn’t really blame it. I had neglected that part of myself for decades, before Luka had released my heart from the cage I had locked it away in, and now, his decision would make it regret or cherish its newfound freedom. “So,” I said, out of patience, “you’ll talk to Yusuf, and then—” “I don’t need to talk to Yusuf.” Suddenly, he hugged my arm, and my nostrils were flooded with the smell of peppermint. A scent he loved because it was hated by Gavin. Being the shameless man that I was around him, thinking about how much his father hated minty tastes and smells didn’t stop me from wondering if his son’s skin would taste minty. Then, I wondered what would happen if Luka kept assaulting my senses with such a distinct smell and flavor. Would it induce Pavlovian reactions that would drive me crazy even when he wasn’t the source? Would I get fully aroused anytime I popped a breath mint in my mouth? “I know what I want,” Luka said with surety, making me forget all about breath mints and unwelcome erections. “I want to help you have a good meeting with Roman, and then, I want to marry you.” Holy shit. He said yes. Holyshitholyshitholyshit. This marriage of convenience wasn’t going to be an insane idea that had tanked our relationship before it had even begun. It would be real and, quite possibly, the biggest challenge of my life. “Thank fuck,” I said roughly. Luka snorted and slid his hand down my arm to clasp mine. “Did you think I’d say no?” “I couldn’t tell. You are by far the most unpredictable motherfucker who has played hot and cold with me.” “I’m pretty sure I’m the only motherfucker who has played hot and cold with you.” He was right—though I didn’t think he should get too big of a head over a few rejections that had led to a marriage agreement once we’d gotten past them. But I suppose he had earned himself a slightly bigger head, since I was prepared to do things to keep him that I never would have considered doing for anyone else. Before we met, Luka had never wanted to sleep with another man, and I had never wanted anything more than sex from another man. A mere week ago, I would have felt nothing but disgust at the idea of a whirlwind romance. Any kind of romance or romancing was not even close to being my thing. But Luka was, undoubtedly, my thing. We had an electric connection. It had been instant, intense, and imagining it stronger—deepened—was a bit terrifying. But I couldn’t stop wondering what it would be like. What he would be
