I flailed in the frigid water as the hole in the ice I’d fallen through grew bigger and bigger. “Mum!” I screamed for help, but I knew it was useless. She’d never hear me. After all, I’d gone to the pond on my own when she’d forbidden me to go. But I was eight years old, which meant I was big enough to make my own decisions. And I’d wanted to go skating. I felt the weight of the skates threaten to drag me down as I kicked. My limbs quickly grew heavy and my joints felt stiff in the icy embrace of the water. Panic began to set in, forcing tears from my eyes and blurring my vision. “Mic! Mickey!” My little sister’s voice broke through the terror of my distress. She must have followed me here.
