I flailed in the frigid water as the hole in the ice I’d fallen through grew bigger and bigger. “Mum!” I screamed for help, but I knew it was useless. She’d never hear me. After all, I’d gone to the pond on my own when she’d forbidden me to go. But I was eight years old, which meant I was big enough to make my own decisions. And I’d wanted to go skating. I felt the weight of the skates threaten to drag me down as I kicked. My limbs quickly grew heavy and my joints felt stiff in the icy embrace of the water. Panic began to set in, forcing tears from my eyes and blurring my vision. “Mic! Mickey!” My little sister’s voice broke through the terror of my distress. She must have followed me here. I could see her pink pom-pom hat bobbing up and down as she crawled along the ice to me. “Go back! You’ll fall in too! Go get Mum!” I called to her, frantically waving at her to go back. Mum would kill me if I let my little sister drown because of my foolishness. “Nope. No time. Don’t worry sissy, I’ve got you.” Gwen dismissed my order to go get Mum and kept crawling toward me, not a hint of fear in her voice. She held my stare, her brown eyes solid in her resolve, a courageous fire burning brightly within them as if she already knew how this whole thing would turn out. “Take my hand!” she called, reaching her pink mittened hand to me. A wave of calm washed over me as I reached for her. A spark of warmth radiated through my whole body as my hand grasped hers. That same spark of warmth penetrated my frozen soul, jolting me from a childhood memory that my mind had all but suppressed. Gwen’s little body had miraculously pulled me from my icy death that day, and it was then that I knew she was something altogether different— special. Now I found myself in the same struggle between life and death. The only difference was the frozen prison that I found myself in. Since Tiger Lily had captured me, I’d found sanctuary in a cozy place deep inside my mind. It was a familiar place. I’d retreated there often enough when the pain from cancer had been too much to bear. But I was pulled from my refuge when a wave of her energy penetrated my defenses and washed over me like electricity. I didn’t need to open my eyes to know that she’d come for me. And my sister’s wrath was so tangible I could feel its presence radiating in the surrounding space. The room came back to me, and I found myself on my knees. My return to consciousness brought a wave of the pain I’d been suppressing and it stole the breath from my lungs. When I could finally focus, she filled my vision in all her vengeful glory. My sister… my Gwen. The authentic
