A QUICK REQUEST… If you happen to spot any errors, like typos, missing punctuation, or (gasp!) factual errors, please feel free to email my assistant at [email protected]. She’ll let me know about these. Please don’t report them using the reporting feature on your Kindle, as this can have consequences for us authors when we don’t respond quickly enough (and Amazon doesn’t always let us know about them!). TRIGGER WARNING This book has mentions of domestic abuse (not on-page, not pertaining to one of the main characters, and not discussed in detail), the death of a friend (in the past), a casual mention of bullying (not a main character, nothing described in detail), and the mention of addiction and eating disorders (briefly mentioned in a conversation). PROLOGUE March 27 1993 - Tiago “Whoomp! (There it is)” blasted through the oversized speakers, and the gym floor vibrated beneath my feet. The song was so catchy I tapped along with it, even after hearing it a thousand times. A few weeks earlier, I’d recorded it from the radio and added it to my latest mixtape, which held all my favorite songs from the last few years. I’d played it so much already I was a little concerned about the tape wearing thin. Maybe I should make a copy, just in case. Luckily, Tomás and I shared a stereo system with a double cassette deck. I kept tapping my foot as I scanned the gym. The prom committee had done a great job decorating, making a real effort with the rather uninspiring Moonlight theme. Glow-in-the-dark stars had been stuck to the ceiling everywhere, and the decorators had covered most of the walls with black velvet curtains with pictures of planets attached to them. A little cheesy but low-cost and effective, and it created a fun atmosphere combined with the strobe lights that replaced the harsh fluorescent tubes that normally illuminated the gym. A sea of dresses and tuxedos crowded the small dance floor, the air so stifling hot that some corsages were already wilting. I stuck a finger behind my red bow tie and tried to loosen it a little. I was sweating my ass off. Oxygen was in short supply, overpowered by a mixed bag of cologne, sweat, perfume, and teenage excitement. Or angst, depending on who you asked. Probably fifty-fifty, I’d guess. My graduating class only held twenty-nine students, so our senior prom also included the juniors. That way, we’d at least have somewhat of a sizable group. Or, as Tomás had put it, so the seventeen boys in our class didn’t have to dance with the same twelve girls all night. He had a point, though I couldn’t say I cared too much. I wasn’t here to dance with a girl anyway. Of course I would, if only to keep up appearances, but I didn’t care about the girls. No, my focus was somewhere else entirely, and considering the glances he was throwing my way as he was dancing, Marnin felt the same way. We’d waited long enough, and we’d both agreed we were done postponing the inevitable. Besides, Auden would be with Tricia, and my bet was on them finding some quiet place to fuck, like The Spot—though Auden was too classy a guy to share any details. But it was easy to tell they’d done it already because of the casual intimacy between them. They’d been going out for two years, so I would’ve been more surprised if they hadn’t gone all the way by now. Essex, who had no issues bragging, had scored a hookup, and Tomás had informed me he’d be spending the night elsewhere as well. Yes, as usual, my twin was faster than me, as I was technically still a virgin. If everything went according to plan, I’d remedy that tonight, but
