Pulsing agony floods my skull with every breath, and for a moment, I can’t even remember my own name. Gradually, snippets of clarity come back to me, but they feel disconnected, like facts about a stranger. I’m Frances Heywood. Twenty-three. I’m… Where am I? I blink my eyes open, but something’s wrong. A scratchy material brushes my eyelids, weighing them down. A groggy part of my brain voices a term for it—blindfold. That’s not the most troubling realization, either. I can’t move. My arms are tied behind my back at awkward angles, and the air smells…wet. Like rust or mildew. My body feels dry, at least, though I’m cold. A gritty substance under my bare feet makes me think of concrete. My teeth are chattering, and the surface I am sitting on is hard and frigid. A metal folding chair? Maybe. Kicking my legs against the floor and rocking back, I hear a metallic squeal echo off the nearby walls. Could I be in a basement? Whatever the case, I’m not in Daze’s apartment—the last place I remember being. I strain my ears but don’t hear a hint of his gruff laugh or coarse murmur. As a chilling silence echoes in his place, I try like hell to remember more. What happened? We were asleep, and then… Without warning, a dozen disjointed images flood my head, and I wince at the speed of them. Me and Daze in his bed. A noise. Him trying to protect me from someone. A man. Silas. He and his goons dragging me into a van. Being blindfolded... I must have gotten knocked out after that. God, they could have taken me anywhere… No. I can’t panic. Think, Frey! “Hello?” I shakily call out. “Is anyone there?” All I hear is my own shrill voice echoing back at me. It’s childish to hope that Daze is here with me, but I do. I call out again. And again. Eventually, I fall silent and put my focus into moving, rocking the chair back and forth to shift over an inch. Another. Maybe somehow, I can find a way to the exit. Wait… A faint murmur draws my notice, and I freeze. Voices? They sound muffled, as if coming from another room, and I don’t know whether to be hopeful or terrified. Surprisingly, my own safety is the least of my concerns. I can’t stop thinking of Daze. Silas hit him, from what I remember—hard. The kind of blow that could have killed him. I won’t ever forgive myself if it did. Oh god… Wallowing in guilt won’t help me, but it’s all I can do to push the prospect to the back of my mind and keep breathing. After Hale, I can’t have another death on my conscious. Because I know in my gut that whatever this is about has to do with me. My father. He wants you unharmed, Silas said. I want to believe he was lying or playing a sadistic mind game at my expense. Father mingles only with trusted politicians and
