She was going to be late picking her daughter up for the third time that week. Not that Peony ever seemed to mind keeping her the extra hour or two, of course, but it was a matter of principle. Her shift had been over for half an hour now, and as much as her boss always promised to add the extra half hour into her pay at the end of the week, somehow it always managed to slip his mind. She didn’t like to complain too often, though. She’d seen far too many waitresses come and go from this place for being ‘difficult’—and it would be a lot harder for Rayla to find another job than it had been for those women. She’d asked Gregor to assign a different waitress to her last table, but he’d refused. Her skin crawled at the way his eyes dropped to the neckline of her shirt as he told her he wanted the prettiest waitress in the place to take care of these particular customers. But what could she do? Gregor had made it very clear that her looks were the main reason he’d hired her, the reason he continued to take the risk of keeping her employed there despite her unique situation… not many other bosses would be willing to pay her under the table in cash. And so she tolerated the way his eyes lingered on her figure, tracing the outline of her voluptuous body under her uniform. As gross as it made her feel, she had to admit that the effect her body had on men came in handy sometimes… there was nothing wrong with using her natural beauty to her advantage. Sometimes she’d even flirt a little with customers in the hopes that it might boost her tips a little. But they could always tell that her heart wasn’t in it. Plenty of rich, handsome, interesting men had come through the doors during her time here, but she’d never felt even a flicker of interest stir her heart. She may as well have been flirting with the furniture. Forcing her well-practiced fake smile onto her face, Rayla brought the bill over to the table full of guests who’d sat down in her section five minutes before her shift had been scheduled to end. The men were merchants, from the looks of them, and their fine clothes suggested they were wealthy, too. Situated as close as it was to Margrav’s travel hub, the restaurant’s clientele was composed mostly of merchants, many of them with more money than sense. Sure enough, these guys had ordered the most expensive drinks on the menu while they conducted whatever business it was that had them talking in low voices. She saw a brief flicker of consternation on the face of the man who’d taken the bill from her as he realized how much the table had spent, but he paid quickly, clearly wanting to appear generous in front of his associates. A shame that generosity didn’t extend to her tip, she thought sourly as she cleared their table. And finally, just before the sun had set for good, she was out of there. Days in the restaurant were invariably long and grueling—she’d been there for nearly two years now, and it hadn’t gotten any easier with time. But there was always a bright spot at the end of those long, poorly-paid shifts. Because no matter how many gross little comments Gregor made about her body, no matter how many rude customers shouted at her or tipped her poorly, no matter how much of the day she spent wishing she could just hide in the bathroom and cry her eyes out… at the end of it, she always knew that her daughter would be waiting for her. If it hadn’t been for Jolie, Rayla honestly didn’t know how she’d have made it through the last few years. But for that smile, she knew that she’d move mountains if she had to. Rayla hurried down the familiar streets of Margrav, dodging around the thick crowds of passersby. This was the busiest part of the city by far, close to the largest transport hub on Isthmus—and the largest in the world beyond that, too. Not that she’d ever been far enough to check. For as long as she could remember, Rayla had lived right here in Margrav, scarcely venturing beyond the restaurant where she worked and the long, narrow street where she and her daughter lived. Of course, with a memory that only reached back three years total, for all she knew, Rayla might have spent her whole life traveling. She was already apologizing when she let herself through the
