I have been ruined… again.” As a fallen woman and a spinster, Selena became a faithful companion to her quirky aunt and her pampered dogs. Until her sister’s upcoming Season brings her back to London and in the strong arms of a stranger. Noah’s mother got married to three different Dukes in her prime. And while he has nothing in common with his beastly father, the Duke of Summerhand fears that he shall soon suffer the same terrible ending. When Selena unexpectedly finds herself in the arms of the Duke, her dress literally crumbling under his hands, she is ruined all over again. And even though he offers to safeguard her honor, he cannot bring himself to risk her life by marrying her. Even if her lips feel so good against his own… Chapter One “Look at me, Noah! Just look at me,” Nicholas demanded. Noah had been doing his best to avoid making eye contact with his cousin, but at this prompting, he swiveled his head slowly so he might fully see what had become of Nicholas Hilrow these last few months. Nicholas, even when he was deep in his cups, had always been an immaculately groomed gentleman. But now, he was filthy. His coal-black hair was matted to his head, and it hung a little long, covering the tips of his ears. There were droopy bags under his eyes, indicating he had not been sleeping properly, and his eyes were positively wild. Untold horrors lurked in them, and it did not help that his eyebrows seemed to be perpetually turned upward as if he was either constantly suffering from a bout of confusion or pleading for succor. “I see you, Cousin,” Noah replied evenly. “And I am sorry for your pitiable situation.” “But you must do something!” Nicholas cried as he slammed his grubby fist on the desk. His wrists were shackled, making his range of motion limited, and the manacles clattered as Nicholas performed this motion a second time. “This will not suffice, Noah.” “I am doing everything in my power to get you out of here,” Noah assured him as he leaned forward and tried to make their conversation a little less boisterous. “I may be a duke myself, but you are being held for the murder of the Duke of Worthington. You should just consider yourself lucky that you have not been sent to the gallows or put on one of the ships bound for the Australian colonies.” Nicholas sneered. “Did you say I should consider myself lucky? Lucky!” His voice took on a hysterical pitch. He tried unsuccessfully to sweep his hands broadly. “My fortunes are great, indeed!” As his bound wrists fell back to the tabletop, he glared at Noah and said in a terse voice, “I have been wrongly accused by your family and you know it.” Noah shook his head. “I know no such thing. All the proof that has been gathered points toward you having something to do with my stepfather’s death, and—” “Lies!” Nicholas fumed. “Abhorrent… abominable claptrap. How can you possibly deign to take someone else’s word over mine?” He leaned forward, making his shackles jangle. “Have you forgotten all the time we spent together as children? Wherever you went, I was there, too. We have always been the very best of friends. How can you forsake me now?” “I have not forsaken you,” Noah replied defensively. “I know that you are in a wretched state but try to see all I have already endeavored to do on your behalf.” He nodded toward the guard who stood five feet away from them. “Were it not for my influence, we would not be permitted to have this conversation. Had I not passed you money every time I visited, you would have never been given clean water or food or proper bedding and—” “Am I supposed to be grateful to you, then?” Nicholas interjected brusquely. “Am I meant to look at your involvement in my case as an act of benevolence?” Noah squeezed his eyes closed and inhaled deeply, trying to calm his
