I open my eyes for the first time in what feels like hours, looking out the window at where she’s brought us. “Is this it?” I ask, noting the sign for the diner just down the road, and the rundown motel across the street. We’re parked in a dirt lot, her engine idling as she waits for me to wake up. “Sure is,” Kiara says, her light southern accent like a cozy blanket. “Middle of absolutely fucking nowhere, just like you asked.” “What’s the name of the town?” I yawn and stretch, sighing as my back pops. “Aberdeen,” she says. She points at the diner. “I called ahead to my friend, she says she’ll give you a job for as long as you need it. Her name’s Stefanie, and she’ll help you with whatever you need.” My heart squeezes in my chest, and tears well up in my eyes. I haven’t known such kindness in a long time, and it almost hurts to be saying goodbye to this woman who has done so much for me. “Thank you, Kiara. I seriously can’t say that enough.” She shakes her head, a few strands of her curly brown hair coming loose from the bun she put it in at some point. “There is no need, sweetheart.
