Humans and werewolves fought tirelessly against each other, devastating the human population. Apparently, it was a gruesome and long battle between werewolves and humans. The werewolves didn’t lose as many people, but humans were creative and killed some. At first, humans didn’t know how to kill werewolves, and they lost many people, but once they figured out the werewolves’ weakness, it was a game changer. Well, not that big of a game changer since humans still lost the war, but they did manage to kill a few hundred werewolves. The werewolf king at that time, Leo, announced that things were going to drastically change for the remaining human population and not for the better. We lost all of our freedoms and became slaves to the werewolves. All of this happened over two hundred years ago. Stories have been passed down from generation to generation, reminding people what happened and how it happened. Parents warn their children not to do anything out of line in fear of them being killed. Books have been written and passed around so that each generation can understand the truth of our history because werewolves have tried to turn everything against humans, telling stories that we started everything. That we were the ones that sought out the werewolves and tried to kill them. Any werewolves who said they started it were never to be seen again. I don’t know what to believe, but I don’t know why humans would seek out werewolves. I think werewolves were tired of hiding, and so they decided to come out. They probably felt that humans were dangerous and needed to be handled. I often wonder if we could have lived in peace. It seems to me that if we would have just talked to each other, it could have changed everything, and we could have lived as equals. I know there would always be someone who would want power over any other race, but it’s nice to dream about a place where we could all live together in peace. Our jobs are assigned to us, and if one of us disappears, another’s job changes. No one knows where the missing humans go. Some people think they die, and some speculate that they are used as breeding tools. I have no clue; I think some people do know but won’t say anything in fear of their lives. I can’t blame them for keeping quiet about it. If I knew where some humans went, I would keep my mouth shut. Blabbing about where they went is a good way to get a punishment. And punishments by the werewolves are brutal. Whips to the back, cane to your hands or feet until they bleed, fingernails being pulled out and more. No one wants that, and so we all keep quiet about anything that could get us in trouble. For the past fifty years, King Leo’s son, Vincenzo, has been king. It is said that his son is way worse than King Leo ever was. I have never met him, but the rumors send chills up my spine. He’s said to be unforgiving and won’t hear any reasoning from the humans. He always sides with his own race, the werewolves. I’ve heard his dad was ruthless, by some werewolves, but always made sure to hear the human side before he made a decision. I don’t know if I believe that. Several older humans have told me that he didn’t give the time of day to humans or hear them out. But they did say that his mate, the queen, was kind to some humans and would encourage her husband to change some verdicts. “Where is number 415?” the guard yells. I feel my friend Claire hit me, bringing me out of my thoughts. I look over at her and give her a questioning look. They called your number, she signs to me. I lift my head and notice a guard looking around. I raise my hand, and he beckons me forward. I glance at Claire, fear all over my face. She stands up and starts to walk with me, but the guard begins to shout. “What are you doing? Sit back down! I only called number 415!” I curl in on myself and can’t help but take a step back. An angry guard is never good. My friend sits down. You don’t mess with the guards or talk back to them. If you do, you are asking for a whipping. I hope once I get up there and the guard realizes I can’t talk that he will let Claire come help me.
