I can’t see. I clamber to my feet and stumble forward as an intense wave of adrenaline surges through my system. My hands are shaking. My legs don’t work properly. I have an overriding impulse to run as fast as I can in any direction but I’m certain if I try I’ll fall over. Where is Graham? I just want Graham. I need someone here who loves me and cares for me. I need someone to wrap their arms around me and tell me everything is going to be all right. What the hell is going on? My mind feels like a jigsaw puzzle that has been smashed into its component parts. I have TWO FOUR DAYS EARLIER Something feels wrong. Normally, I’m good at reading situations. I’ve had to be. When you have the sort of past I have, you need all your wits about you. Now, though, my gut is telling me to turn around. I take a step backwards so I can get a better view of the Victorian terraced house in front of me. It doesn’t look like it did on the email I was sent and to say it looks run down would be an understatement. Moss has grown over the tops of bricks and whole sections are missing on some of them, exposing crumbling mortar underneath. One of the wooden windows is rotten at the corner,
