Acknowledgments CHAPTER ONE THEA It didn’t matter where we were going as long as we were together. For the last week, I’d dreaded attending the Solstice Ball and contending with more curious vampires and jealous familiars. But now I stared at the ring resting over my satin glove. It was beautiful, but it wasn’t the flawless emerald or its antique emerald that made is so lovely. It was what it represented. A future. Our future. Julian reached for my hand and lifted it to his lips as if he was thinking the same thing. For a moment, it didn’t matter that we were headed toward a ballroom full of potential enemies. Or that I was still grappling with learning I was a siren and all the questions that raised. All that mattered was him and his hand in mine as we drove under the clear evening sky. And maybe it wouldn’t always be like this. Once the Rites were over and we were married, maybe we would find ourselves driving along the Grecian coast for no other reason than to hold hands. It was all I could wish for, the rest of my dreams had come true. I glanced out the window, looking for a star to make my final wish. But just as I did Julian veered over the edge of the cliff. “Julian!” I grabbed his broad shoulder as the car went over the edge, my stomach plummeting in expectation. But there was no weightless fall, no fiery crash—nothing happened at all. Digging my fingers into his shoulder, I stared out the window as the world shimmered and blurred before turning into a new one altogether. Before us, the street continued into a bustling neighborhood. Despite the late hour, people dashed out of shops carrying strange objects, families walked down the sidewalk, and friends lingered under flickering strings of lights at open-air bistros. Each and every one of them was dressed like it was the middle of summer and not winter. I glanced over my shoulder, eyes fluttering as rapidly as my heart, and saw the edge of Corfu’s old town swimming behind me as though it were behind an airy screen. “Probably should have warned you about that,” my mate said with barely suppressed laughter. I scrambled to get ahold of myself, pasting a glare on my face. “You drove off a cliff!” “Yes.” “We could have died,” I snapped. “I knew there was a street there.” He reached for my hand and took it in his own again. Moments ago, he’d held it, kissed it, and then, he’d nearly given me a heart attack. “Will you forgive me if I told you I was so distracted by my beautiful mate that I forgot to tell you we were heading into the Mystikos Synoikia?” I raised an eyebrow. “The Veiled Quarter,” he translated. “Let me guess. This is a magical oasis like the île Caché?” I asked with a ragged sigh as I rubbed out the stress in my chest. I should have known a place like this existed in Corfu. Julian had taken me somewhere similar in Paris. There, the streets were quiet and nearly empty save for vampires and familiars visiting shops that catered to the magical elite—and others with more dangerous tastes. Corfu was packed. “This city is beloved by vampires,” he said with a nod. “Mostly because they’ve enchanted it to be a perfect seventy-three degrees and sunny year-round. Our kind comes from all over the world to visit.” “Wait. Are you telling me we’re basically at vampire Ibiza?” I could only imagine the amenities that were on offer for holiday-goers here. Julian’s lips twisted as he maneuvered down a busy street, narrowly avoiding a group of girlfriends that looked like they were having the time of their lives. He slammed on his brakes and beckoned for them to pass. One of the girls, a leggy brunette, blew him a kiss, her friends laughing next to her—until they caught sight of me. I narrowed my eyes possessively, allowing whatever fearsome blood flowed in my veins to take hold of me, and they all hurried quickly away. Turning, I caught Julian’s bemused expression. “What?” I demanded. “I love it when you go all alpha on me,” he teased. “It’s super sexy.” “Oh, shut up.” I rolled my eyes. The truth was that I knew exactly what he meant. It wasn’t that
