So she takes matters into her own hands. She proposes to the only man she has ever wanted. Lord Percy, The Earl of Templeton, is focused on one thing only: upholding his father’s legacy. Until he reunites with an alluring woman who is in dire need of his help. And he just can’t say no to her… Percy has three rules. Elizabeth must never: bother him, fall in love with him and betray him. Yet as their desire starts growing fiercer, following the rules proves impossible… Before You Start Reading… The protagonists of this book, Elizabeth and Percy have had the pleasure of meeting before, in Elizabeth’s first Season. Do you want to become an old maid?” demanded the Earl of Mallen crossly of his daughter as their carriage rolled and swayed on the road towards Blackmore Manor. Elizabeth turned from the window and regarded him with a mildly questioning expression in her green eyes. “Anyone would think spinsterhood was your sworn ambition from the way you carry on,” Lord Mallen continued. “It’s a tragedy for a woman with your looks, brains and station. What would your poor dear mother have thought?” “There are worse fates,” Elizabeth stated calmly, her gloved hands folded neatly in her lap. “And as my poor dear mother died when I was too young to remember her, I suspect she had little time to think about my future marriage. Still, I have never stated that I won’t marry. I simply have no one to marry.” “No one to marry?!” Lord Mallen exclaimed, his plump grey-haired face exasperated. “Give me strength! You must have turned down half of the kingdom’s eligible bachelors over the past seven years, as well as that American rail heir, and the Swedish princeling. Dukes, earls, viscounts… I wouldn’t have argued with you marrying Sir Anthony Mallerby’s eldest boy either, even if he is from trade.” “The vintage wine business has certainly been very profitable for Sir Anthony and his family,” Elizabeth agreed affably. “And I’m certainly not naive enough to believe that money is not a key consideration in a match.” Lord Mallen ignored this snipe at his likely commercial motives for wishing his daughter to marry. Aside from anything else, Elizabeth knew that her father preferred not to raise his financial problems in front of George, his seven-year-old son, who was sitting beside them with his mother, Prudence, Lady Mallen. Children were liable to repeat what they heard, and Lord Mallen could not afford rumors about his financial insolvency to start circulating. Only his charisma and determination and the ruthless cunning of his wife, Prudence, had prevented the total collapse of his industrial ventures in the north. A rich and generous son-in-law would be a boon to him. Still, Elizabeth wondered why her father was choosing to have this conversation again right now. Most likely, there would be prospective suitors of his choosing at the charity event they were attending that day at the home of the Duke and Duchess of Colborne. Most likely old, dull and well-monied. She groaned inwardly at the thought of going through the same pointless charades yet again. “So, the tickets from today’s event are raising money for St. Hilda’s Hospital for the poor, near Blackmore Manor,” Elizabeth said, taking the pamphlet from her pocket and reading it aloud in an attempt to change the subject. “There’s going to be musical entertainment, literary readings and a children’s tea party this afternoon, and then early supper and dancing until nine o’clock.” But Lord Mallen was not to be swayed from his course so easily. “I’m not some ogre trying to force my daughter to marry a man she doesn’t want,” Lord Mallen claimed, shaking his head as though baffled by her intransigence. Elizabeth raised an eyebrow sharply at this rather comical claim. She was remembering that seven years ago, he had tried to do exactly that. She had been saved only by the intervention of Jacob, the Marquess of Wycliff, both her friend and the rich, titled man her father had wanted her to marry. Jacob had even blackmailed Lord Mallen into making his own father, Lord Walford, Elizabeth’s joint legal guardian and a block on any unwanted marriage proposals until she reached the age of majority and was better able to legally
