I love birthdays, or I used to love birthdays when I was a kid and excited about getting the latest barbie doll. But now the realisation hits me like a freight train. I was alone. I wasn’t getting any younger and I had the worst dating history so settling down was not going to happen anytime soon. ‘Happy birthday to Cody…’ I jolt from my thoughts, plastering on a fake smile as I blow out the candles on my numbered cake, just reminding me of my age. I felt like I was failing at life. No man. No ring. No kids. No three words telling me just how much I mean to someone. It's just three little words; three words that can change your life. They shouldn’t mean as much as they do, but they do. Those three powerful words. But does anyone really mean it when they say it? How easy is it just to let them slip off your tongue? I love you. Chapter One 18th Birthday “Come on Cody, we need to get ready!” My friend Hallie called, banging on the door as I brushed my teeth. I tapped my phone screen with my knuckle to look at the time. Shoot. “Coming!” I shouted out, spitting and rinsing my mouth as I tightened my towel around my slender body and run for the bedroom. I saw Hallie, Mable and Tia all standing looking at me, arms crossed against their chest. “We’re going to be late, I booked us VIP with George, he pulled a lot of strings to get us in, don’t blow this Cody!” Mable scowled at me. I held my hand up indicating I was sorry as I rushed to my walk-in closet, grabbing a little black dress and killer heels. I dropped the towel, shimmying into my seamless thong and bra. “You think this dress, yes?” I asked as I held the tiny scrap of material that had one shoulder covered in a floral detail. They all nodded. “You’ll look hot, and we need to find you someone to go home with,” Hallie smiled as she looked at my other two friends. I rolled my eyes, shaking my head from side to side. I pulled my dress up my legs and over my hips then slipping one arm through the dress. It was a stretchy material so I could pull it lower or higher. My brown hair was already down and straight, sitting just under my breasts. I grabbed my bag and spritzed myself with my perfume then slipped my feet into the black, strapped sandals. “Ready?” I asked. “Ready!” The girls sung as we clinked our canned cocktails and knocked them back. Nothing like a bit of Dutch courage. This was our weekends. Every weekend. My birthday was the seventeenth, but whatever day it fell on, we had a girl’s night whether that be in, and if it was the weekend we were definitely out. Giggling as we walked cautiously down the stairs, I really didn’t want to break my ankle on my birthday. As we got to the bottom of the stairs, my father stood in front of the door, crossing his arms across his chest. He coughed, clearing his throat as his eyes glided up and down my body. “Young lady…” he trailed off.
