Josh Epilogue - Bree SNEAK PEEK OF BOSS’S FAKE FIANCEE Chapter One – Owain Chapter Two - Raven 1 BREE “Hmm, I love the smell of apple pie in the morning,” I commented as I stared at my stepmother’s tray of apple pies on the kitchen table. The scent of cinnamon had disturbed my sleep and lured me out of my bedroom that morning. It was impossible to sleep whenever Allison was in the kitchen. Now that I was in the kitchen staring at the luscious well-baked, brown goodness on the table, I couldn’t stop my mouth from watering. The crisp, golden-brown color of the pie was alluring, or maybe it was just my love for pastries that dragged my attention to the table. I ran my tongue over my lower lip and flashed a grin toward Allison. “Mind if I have a taste?” Allison was still bent over the table, but my question made her look up and the teasing grin on her lips widened. “Stay away,” Allison said to me in a playful tone as I tried to reach for one pie. She swatted my hand away playfully, and I giggled as I stepped back from the table. “This belongs to a client; I have to deliver these in a few hours, and I’ve been up all night.” “You need help?” I asked, but I was already reaching for an apron on the wall and a pair of gloves. “I don’t mind lending a hand.” Allison smiled at me before she turned to the oven to take out another tray of pie. “I’d love that,” she answered. “How was your first night back on the Island?” she asked. “Do you feel jet-lagged?” “Not the slightest bit. It doesn’t feel like I spent even a day out here. This place is always refreshing.” Three years had passed since I last visited Hawaii, and in that time I had done enough exploration to last a lifetime. The weather this time of the year was the best. Summertime here was sure to deliver vibrant skies, warm weather and cool beaches, the perfect scenario for the relaxation I never got enough of in New York.. Besides, Hawaii had always been the getaway place for me since the first time I visited here when I was eighteen. After my father’s wedding to Allison five years ago, I spent my gap year here in Oahu with them enjoying the cool island breeze, surfing and cruising the H-1. Every day was memorable, I made a new friend and got to see my father experience a new love. He was the happiest I had seen him back then, and with the glow on Allison’s cheeks, she was also still as bubbly as she was the last time we saw each other. Our relationship had bloomed over the years. We Facetimed whenever we had the chance, and I was able to watch my family grow from across the country. Allison was the reason my father moved his life from New York to Hawaii, and even though at the start I feared our lives would change, that hadn’t happened. I’m happier with her in our lives. As they approached their one-year anniversary, my gap year was coming to a close and it was time to get off of the island to carve a path for myself. Leaving the island to get a degree in catering had been difficult because I missed my family, but it had been worth it for me. Her smile was wide as she looked at me, “No regrets?” she asked. I shook my head and cast a glance in her direction while grinning. “None.” Why would I regret returning to Hawaii? Lots of good things happened to me here. My father met the love of his life, and I met my best friend here too. It was a long decision at first when I thought of returning. Allison had thought the change was a great idea, and with the kind of year I had, she wasn’t wrong. The heartache from my last relationship had lasted months, so yes, moving to Hawaii was the best decision I had made in a long time. “Great … I’m glad you feel that way.” We were still discussing when the kitchen door opened again. I looked up from the pie in front of me as my father walked in with Samuel, my three-year-old stepbrother. “Mom,” Samuel announced in a cheery tone as he hurried towards Allison and wrapped his hands around her legs. “Dad bought me a bicycle,” he continued. “He’s going to teach me to ride in the backyard.” Allison laughed as she lifted Samuel off the floor and kept him steady on her hips. “You’re going to learn to ride fast,” she told him before ruffling his hair. “Hey dad,” I greeted when my father walked over to me for a brief hug. “How are you doing?” When I arrived last night, he had stepped out of his home office briefly to greet me, before getting back to work. I hadn’t seen him since then, and now that he was in front of me, I noticed how much the years had aged him. “I’m great,” he answered me with a smile that reached the corners of his eyes and wrinkled them. We hugged again before he stepped back, walked over to Allison, and kissed her on the lips. Samuel was still chatting excitedly about his bicycle and my dad was about to pick a pie from the tray when Allison slapped his hand away too.
