He had probably known it the first time he’d laid his eyes on her a couple of months ago when she had moved in next door to live with her uncle and aunt in their upscale, suburban neighborhood in Austin, Texas. The tall, slim, dark-haired girl with her soulful hazel eyes had captured his heart from the very first moment. But it had taken him forever to ask her out on a date. His bedroom window had a fine view of hers next door, and he knew for a fact that she spent most of her time in there after school—by herself. But he’d never managed to find her alone so he could ask her out. Even after six months of trying, all he’d known was her name—Katya Romanoff—and that was only because his mother had told him when he’d pretended a casual interest in the girl next door. He knew he had it bad when she began making a regular appearance in his dreams. He’d finally gotten lucky when one day after school, he’d found her limping back home—a distance of several miles—when he’d taken his motorbike out for a ride in the general vicinity of her school, hoping to catch a glimpse of her. He avoided doing it too frequently lest he be labeled a stalker, but he had known that his only chance to ask her out on a date would be on her way back from school. He’d been flooded with immediate concern as he’d pulled up next to her and found her ankle swollen. She told him she’d sustained an injury on the field during baseball practice and had missed the school bus. She’d tried calling her uncle to come pick her up, but he’d been too busy. He’d hated the sad look that had come into her eyes when she’d told him about her uncle. There had been so many questions he had wanted to ask, but he had stopped himself. When he’d told her he would be more than glad to take her back home, she’d seemed somewhat nervous. But he’d soothed her fears, had told her he lived next door, even showed her his driving license as proof. “You’re twenty. I used to wonder if you’d already graduated or just went to a different school,” she had said, smiling a little, confessing that she’d already known who he was the minute he had pulled up. His heart had turned to mush at her smile and her words, but he’d refrained from telling her that not only had he graduated from school many decades ago, he also had several college degrees under his belt, while he’d helped her put on her helmet and get on his bike. When she had clung tightly to his middle throughout the ride, he had savored the feel of her warm hands on his body, even though he had been wearing protective gear. Her body pressed against his had felt like heaven. He had stopped his bike a few yards away from their homes, knowing that he wouldn’t be getting another chance to ask her out for a long, long time. She’d said yes to the date and he had thought he had displayed remarkable restraint by settling for pumping the air with his fist rather than lifting her off her feet and swinging her round and round in the air. When she’d admitted that she’d had a little crush on him as well, he had felt his chest swell. After their first date, he knew he’d be spending the rest of his life with her. The connection, the sense of knowing deep down in his soul he’d felt the moment he’d seen her, had only strengthened during the course of their date at the local diner where they’d talked and talked. Within a matter of hours, they’d come to know each other really, really well. She’d told him she was an orphan, having lost her parents when she’d been only four. She’d been brought up by her maternal grandparents until last year, when she’d first lost her grandfather, then her grandmother within months of each other. Her aunt, her mother’s sister, had grudgingly taken her in, but only because her tuition had already been taken care of by the small inheritance her grandfather had left her. She’d told him she was going to leave her uncle and aunt’s house the day she turned eighteen and could claim the inheritance. He’d told her he had been born in Ireland, but they’d moved to the U.S. when he had still been quite young. His parents were both from Ireland, but his dad had moved his investment business overseas where Niall was now working. He had glossed
