EPILOGUE The End Prequel Prologue Mair About Author Chapter 1 Endersticks and stones and bonesThe thing about light is that I am forever drenched in it. I am not sure if I call to it or if it calls to me, but we find each other even when the moon is absent. Even when the stars are shrouded by clouds. I have not seen the sun in a decade, but I am still surrounded by a brightness that does not belong to my own soul, a brightness that does not seem to exist on a physical level. That is far darker, covered in shadows and cobwebs and crawling with spiders. I don’t blame myself for that. I blame the caves. I blame the guards who brought me here, the royal family who sentenced me to a life of midnight, and I blame the beetles that crawl over my body as if I am already dead. I think I could have been someone else. I’m not so sure I would like her any more than I like who I am now, but at least she would not be cold, inside and out, calculating, thinking through every dying breath, and cowardly choosing to remain in the dark rather than try to live, because living inside of a rock is surely worse than even the sort of hell that us witches go to. I think the worst part of it all is that I don’t even remember why I’m here. I assume I must have done something horrible, but what? I’ve spent most of my life here, which means I would have been nothing more than a child when I landed here. It would have to have been something truly horrific. I remember what I did when I was trying to escape my fate, the people I killed, but I don’t know what I did to have them come after me in the first place. I think that’s what terrifies me. The not knowing. What am I capable of? What was I capable of?It isn’t true what they say about sticks and stones. The sticks and stones do, of course, break the bones. But it’s the words you say, the spells, that hail the rocks and the twigs at the boy that kill him. It’s fine. I might be blessed by the light, but no friend has ever been so loyal to me as the dark. Chapter 2 Saileto see herI eye the criminals that I’ve been studying from the rooftops for three days now, trying to figure out which one I’ve got the best shot with. I’m not one to overestimate myself. I’ve lived a relatively cozy life, but not a stupid one. I know that, even with my magic, even with the three people I’ve killed to get this far, it would be easy for them to take down. Any of them, from looks alone. I’m not as muscular as any of them. That’s not to say I’m weak because weak people don’t make it as far as I have, but I’m certainly not walking around with tree trunks for arms. I’ve had my fair share of offensive and defensive training, though. I’ve learned that my leaner frame tends to make me a little faster on my feet. So, really, the true issue here is figuring out which one of these men is the slowest, and which of them would be the easiest to outsmart.I must learn as much as I can about them. I’ve learned that none of them can be very smart if they haven’t seen me watching them yet. That, or they are overly confident and don’t feel the need to look over their shoulders, because who would go after big, bad criminals like them? They’re petty thieves. They’re murderers. So, really, it’s lucky I’m the first one to get to them and that they haven’t been caught yet. Lucky for me, anyway, otherwise I’d have no one to kill for the sole purpose of getting caught. How else would I get to her?Because I have to.All of this. It’s all quite drastic, really. The lengths I’ve had to go through to find her when it’s very possible she could already be dead. I highly doubt any of the prison guards that are watching her are full of motivation when it comes to keeping the country’s worst criminals alive, and I doubt they get more than a slap on the wrist when those prisoners die of starvation, infection, or thirst.I will not allow her to be dead. She’s the only chance we have. She’s the only chance witches have. They need someone to stand up for them, to show their face first, to be the person brave enough to do what they’ve all been afraid of doing. They need someone to usher what’s left of them out of their hiding places,
