CHAPTER THIRTY-ONE 32. CHAPTER THIRTY-TWO one M elissa “Melissa? Are you coming?” I tear my eyes away from my phone. “Yes! All ready to go.” My fiancé Dan peers over my shoulder and I shrink away instinctively, hiding it from his view. “What are you looking at?” “Just shopping for dresses,” I tell him, my face slightly hot. The truth is, I am shopping, but not for clothes. I’m staring at the same item in my shopping cart that’s been there for months: a beginner “playtime” kit complete with handcuffs, ropes, and a collar. The kit costs $50, and ever since I “accidentally” stumbled across it on the website, I haven’t been able to get it out of my head. But there’s no point admitting to Dan what I’ve been fantasizing about. The first (and only) time I suggested we try something as mild as a light spanking, he looked at me like I’d grown an extra head. The utter confusion and shock on his face was enough to guarantee I never brought up the topic again. To him, sex means missionary with the lights off. Maybe cowgirl if we’re getting kinky. Still, he checks all the boxes. Tall, handsome, successful career, actively seeking commitment… I have to keep reminding myself that I’m lucky. A lot of women would kill for a partner like that. Not having a spark in the bedroom is a small price to pay. Besides, we’re working on that. Or at least I am. Because even though Dan doesn’t know it, I have a special surprise for him tonight: a couple days ago, I went to the salon and got waxed for the first time. And sure, there were moments where it felt slightly like a medieval torture, but ever since, I’ve been so aroused it’s been hard to contain myself. My skin is so smooth, and I just feel incredibly sexy and eager to share it. Tonight. I’m already planning to hand him my panties under the table at the end of dinner. By the time we get home, I want him desperate to tear my clothes off. I’ll show him exactly who he’s marrying. “Let’s go,” says Dan, opening the front door of our shared apartment. “I just want to make a quick stop first.” *** I’m confused when I see that this “one stop” is a luxury apartment building in one of the richest areas of the city. “What are we doing here?” I ask Dan as the valet takes his car. “I managed to score an invite to a high roller poker game,” he tells me excitedly. “I just want to play a few hands.” My face falls. I know Dan has been gambling more often lately, but I didn’t expect this. “Poker game? You didn’t say anything about a poker game. I was really excited to go to dinner.” He gives an exaggerated sigh. “Melissa, you’re such a downer.” My stomach rumbles. “What time is our reservation?” “I didn’t make a reservation. I’m sure we’ll be able to get a table somewhere. Now come on, I’ve been really excited about this.” He starts walking without waiting for my reply. I take a deep breath, then follow, swallowing my frustration. “Top floor,” Dan says to the doorman, positively beaming. “Here to see Mr. Rossi.” The doorman nods and let us in. I follow my fiancé to the elevator and we ride it up together, my stomach still rumbling. When the elevator door opens, however, my hunger dissipates immediately into nervous butterflies. A man is standing there to greet us, and something about him scares me. Everything about him is dark, from his hair, to his short beard, to his perfectly fitted suit. But nothing about him is darker than his eyes, despite their icy blue. Those are the eyes of a killer. I can see intricate tattoos extending below his sleeve, all the way down the back of his left hand. As he steps forward, my vision catches on the unmistakable shape of a pistol tucked into his waistband. “We’re, uh, here for the poker game,” says Dan, straightening up. The man smiles, a cold grin that doesn’t reach his steely eyes. He looks at Dan, and then at me. “I’m going to need to pat you down.” For the first time, Dan, looks slightly nervous. “Is that really necessary?” The man doesn’t reply, just raises his eyebrows, almost in warning. “Uh, yeah, okay, you can pat me down. It’s not like I have a gun or anything,” Dan mumbles, stepping forward and allowing himself to be searched. “Now you,” says the man, turning to me. “Oh come on,” Dan protests, “she isn’t—” The armed stranger silences him with a look. When he turns back to me, however, his expression is no longer stern. A little smile curls about his lips, and he looks me up and down slowly, taking me in. Appreciating what he sees. “You… you can search me if you need to,” I tell him meekly, and goosebumps spread up my neck as he makes eye contact. He’s intimidatingly handsome, exuding an aura of authority that makes it clear he’s used to being in
