Kelly’s summery smell of sunscreen and cherry blossom perfume filled Annie’s nose, combining with the clean linen scent that lingered in her parent's living room. Home. It was so good to be back. Annie loved her life in Boston, but the city had gotten stale. Unbearably sticky in the July heat, so hot that heat waves radiated across the cobble-stoned streets. She'd spontaneously booked this trip back home two days ago. You can't do that if you live in London. The thought nagged at her, and she tried to let Kelly's death grip of a hug squeeze it right out of her. Ever since the Evangeline London Children's Hospital had contacted her with an official job offer, she'd been locked in an internal battle about it. "Smushy?" Her childhood nickname caught her attention. Kelly, her hazel eyes wide, waved her hand in front of Annie's face. "Ready to go?" She asked. Annie nodded, wrapping her arm around her best friend's slim shoulders. They were as physically different as could be but sisters in every way that mattered. Kelly was tall, with a playful blonde bob and golden tan skin. She'd played field hockey all through high school before going on to play at a D1 school on a full scholarship in college. She had long, toned legs that always drew second looks and wolf whistles from men, but Kelly only ever had eyes for her high school sweetheart, Michael. In comparison, Annie was petite, barely reaching 5’ 4’’. Her fair skin was covered in freckles, and she wore her auburn hair long. She'd spent so much of her teenage years ashamed of her curves, jealous of Kelly's beautifully toned physique, but she had grown to love her size 12 body. Arm in arm, they made the short walk down the tree-lined street to Kelly's childhood home. She had an inground pool that had always been the envy of all the kids on the street. Annie had missed this – the sound of their sandals slapping against their feet in rhythm with one another, the humming of cicadas in the lush trees. Home. "Oh my god, you will not believe what happened." Uh-oh, what bit of neighborhood gossip does she have to spill…? "My parents are getting divorced." Annie stumbled, nearly rolling over her ankle as her flip-flop started sliding off her foot. "WHAT?" She blurted out, yanking her errant sandal back on. "You know how much of a bitch my mom is." Well, yeah. Twenty-three years ago, Tracey Jones had been the beauty queen of Valley Falls High until she got pregnant with Kelly during her sophomore year of high school. It was obvious from how she'd treated her daughter that she saw Kelly as a burden when Kelly was young and competition when she hit puberty. Kelly spent most of high school on the hockey field or hiding out at Annie's house to get as far away from her mother as possible. "She cheated on my dad." Who the hell would cheat on Mason Jones? Annie would never say the thought out loud. But come on. The man was gorgeous. He'd been a senior in high school when Kelly had been born and was easily still the best-looking man in town, as far as Annie was concerned. She'd had a crush on him since she was a teenager, much to her chagrin. The girls reached the gate surrounding the Jones' backyard, the smell of chlorine thick in the humid air. Kelly swung open the gate and flopped down onto one of the lounge chairs clustered along the pool deck. Tracey had found a successful career in real estate, and Mason had been the Valley Fall Police Captain for over a decade; their huge house and sprawling backyard reflected the money they made. "He was pretty devastated, to be honest." Kelly's white-blond brows furrowed. "I've never seen him that upset before. It was awful." Annie reached out from the chair beside hers to grab her friend's hand. "I'm so sorry, Kelly." Kelly let out a huff of air, squeezing Annie's hand back. "It was rough, I won't lie. But things are better now. Moms moved out, and Dad's thinking of retiring soon." Weird to think of Mason out of uniform… The thought would have turned dirty had Kelly not continued talking. "Michael should be here soon," she said, checking her phone. "Awe, yay! I'm stoked to see him." Michael was the only person as close to Kelly as Annie, her high school boyfriend she'd been devoted to for nearly ten years. They'd all graduated from Valley Falls High together. He was a total sweetheart, and the only man Annie could imagine being worthy of Kelly's love. A loud, deep voice called out from the other side of the fence. Speak of the devil. "Whoa, whoa, WHOA! Ladies, I've gotten a noise complaint; sounds like we're having a little too much fun over here?" Michael's hair is closely cropped, a symbolic haircut he'd recently gotten upon getting his first ‘Big Boy Job’ at the local tax firm. His face had squared out from the chubby cheeks he had
