They shouldn’t even pretend to be in love… I wish someone had told me this before I said yes. Agreeing to play the role of a girlfriend for Crew Beckett’s billionaire family was a gamble. I looked like a silly girl when I couldn’t stop admiring him in his suit. His messy brown hair continued to remind me of the night we spent together. He didn’t know that my family was royalty. Scratch that, he still doesn’t know that secret of mine. But just as he needed to clean up his reputation with a fake girlfriend… I also needed a man to keep my family from forcing me to return to Ambrosia. Taking on my royal responsibilities terrifies me. Being in the arms of this player makes me feel the kind of princess I want to be. Telling him what’s in my heart is risky. But I have to reveal the other secret I’m keeping from him. Everything could crumble down once he finds out that I’m not only pregnant with his twins… but I’m also not who he thinks I am. 1 NOELLE Stifling a sigh, I tell myself the date isn’t going as badly as it feels. That I’m just being dramatic and the worry gnawing at my gut is due to the ticking clock that my parents have set for me. But the truth is, the man sitting across the table from me is not my type of person. As much as I would like him to be, he just isn’t the one. My attention wanders over the other diners in the restaurant, specifically to the attractive couple at the table next to us. They look to be in their late 20s and they can’t keep their eyes or hands off each other. I watch him lean close and whisper something in her ear. The woman’s face flushes, and she lets out a low, seductive laugh full of promise. Longing and a sliver of jealousy spears through me. I’ve never experienced that kind of connection with anyone. No man has ever gazed deeply into my eyes and whispered naughty secrets in my ear. It’s something I yearn for but, for whatever reason, it never seems to happen. I’ve been under a lot of pressure to find someone and settle down these last few years and I turned to online dating when it didn’t happen organically. So much for that, I think, and look back over at my date who is currently sporting breadcrumbs in his beard. He’s also been talking about himself nonstop since we sat down and hasn’t bothered to ask me a single question. The last thing I need in my life is a narcissistic asshole. Strike that. Another narcissistic asshole because how could I forget Alec Graham? “Excuse me,” I say, the moment he pauses between breaths. Before he can continue talking about himself, I quickly stand up. “I’m going to use the restroom. Be right back.” I hurriedly turn and head for the bathroom in the corner. Once I sneak inside, I pull my phone out of my purse and text my best friend, Katie Halloran. S.O.S., I type and hit send. That’s all I need to write. It’s our code when we need immediate saving from a date gone bad. Typical protocol means she will call me in exactly three to five minutes with some kind of “emergency” that will require me to leave right away. I fluff my medium-length blonde hair, fix the eyeliner under my blue eyes and pull in a deep breath. Unfortunately, the uber perfect guy who I’ve been messaging all week is nothing like I had hoped he would be. Another disappointing date for the books. There are millions of people living in New York City? Why is it so hard to find a decent guy? Maybe it’s me, I think, and push the bathroom door open. Are my expectations too high? All I want is a man who is kind, respectful and who listens to me when I speak. I mean, really listens. Not someone who just drones on and on about himself for
