Happy reading, Tee Chapter One Students rushed onto the grassy lawns in front of their school, happily chattering and hugging like it had been an entire year since they’d seen each other rather than just a couple months. I sat in the car next to Remy as we watched students gather together, phones out for selfies, some sitting and scrolling through their Instagram or TikTok feeds, others looking at their schedules, checking to make sure they had all the supplies and books needed for the start of another year. I pushed my emergency blinker button and parked the car in the round circle driveway that sat in front of the school. The ancient brick buildings rose up, three in all, tall and looming with pointed peaks and stone gargoyles lurking on ledges, overlooking the grounds. I’d attended this very school, and being back here brought up so many memories, both good and bad. Mainly good. “You ready for this?” I asked Remy as she looked at her new school: Whispering Willows Magical Academy—the best this town had to offer. Remy’s brown curls grazed her shoulder, and she turned to me. “This really isn’t a big deal, Mom. I know half these kids already from hanging out with them over the summer. Everything is gonna go great.” She reached over and patted my hand. “It’s okay to be nervous, but I’ll be alright, promise.” Yes, admittedly, I was nervous about Remy starting a new school her senior year. She’d so easily left behind our life in Portland and accepted this new life in Whispering Willows, and I think I was still waiting for the hammer to drop. But ever since Remy found out we were witches, that Whispering Willows was home to a supernatural community full of fairies, vampires, werewolves, and so much more, she’d been, well . . . fine. Too fine. It was making me not fine. “It’s just another day.” Remy grabbed the door handle. “Let’s not make a big deal about it.” She hopped out of the car, door still open. “You don’t see anyone else’s parents here fawning over their kids, do you?” She blew me a kiss and adjusted her purple backpack. “See you after school at the shop?” I nodded and smiled. “Yeah, hon. Of course.” A gaggle of loud voices drowned out the chatter of students. “Bones, you idiot!” “You’re the one who insisted we all ride together,” another voice said, this one a thick Irish accent. “Because I’m environmentally conscious. Carpooling is the responsible thing to do.” Oh. Oh no. Remy had the same look of horror on her face that I felt in that moment. I turned in my seat and my fears were confirmed: Martin, Bones, Myrtle, Helen, and Gene all marched toward us, Gene looking surlier than usual, which was saying a lot, given that the vampire’s entire M.O. was prickly with a side of grumpy. Helen kissed him on the cheek, and he flashed a ghost of a smile. Except when it came to his wife, the only person on the planet who could bring out the sunshine in him. “What are they doing here?” Remy hissed at me, darting glances back at the group, students beginning to take notice. “I thought we told them absolutely no stepping foot on school grounds?” I shrugged helplessly as they strode with purpose toward us. Martin had a phone in his hand, and—I squinted—did Bones have a video camera? Oh lord. This would not go well for Remy, who desperately wanted to blend in today more than any other day. “Remy!” Martin called, his green skin flushed with excitement as he practically vibrated. “Remy! We’re here for your first day of school!” Remy winced, students now blatantly staring, their gazes bouncing between Remy and the ragtag group currently fiddling with the video camera Bones held. The half-giant towered over them, and Martin, half his height, jumped and swiped at the camera. “Give me that!” Bones only held it higher, which made Martin angrier, of course. “Will you two pull yourselves together?” Myrtle asked in that unmistakable Irish accent. “You’re embarrassing Remy.” Her golden tracksuit glittered bright in the sun, matching her rectangle glasses and poofy yellow hair. Wrinkles upon wrinkles lined her ancient face as she frowned. “Now how do I work the camera on this phone?” Myrtle banged the phone with her hand, muttering at it. Remy groaned and smashed her face against the car. “Kill me now,” she mumbled. Okay, time to do some damage control. I got out of the car and met the group on the sidewalk. “Hi everyone, um, I thought we agreed we weren’t doing this?” I tried to keep my voice light and cheery while also conveying a “this is really not the time” tone, which would hopefully hint that they needed to turn around and go home. It did not. Helen smiled, her blue eyes dancing with amusement. “I told them. I told them this was a bad idea.” Martin waved off her words. “Oh pish posh. We weren’t going to miss Remy’s first day of her senior year of high school.” The imp sniffled, tears in his eyes. “They just grow up so fast.” He buried his face into Bones’s arm, wailing loudly, while Bones patted him, using his other
