A huge thank you to Phil, and Holly from Publication Pixie. You make my days so much easier. But this book is for my readers - love wins every time xxx Chapter One “For goodness sake, Remy, what do you think you’re doing? We’ve got guests arriving any minute.” “Soft voice, Mother, please. I’ve said it a million times before, you need to speak softly around the Orobos. They don’t like loud noises.” Remy, also known as Prince Remy of Bentley, smoothed a firm hand down the large reptilian creature resting her head on his knee. “Daisy is still feeling grumpy after Rudolf snapped at her this morning.” The huge orange lizard yawned in agreement, showing large, sharp teeth. Rudolf had been lucky he’d gotten away with his nose intact. His mother’s sigh was familiar. Remy didn’t even have to look up to know she was wearing her ‘I love my son, but sometimes he makes me want to pull my hair out’ expression. “Remy, you promised you’d behave while the Balenborn delegation was here. Prince Xavier’s offer for your hand was admittedly unexpected…” “That’s for sure.” Remy snorted quietly. “He doesn’t even like me, Mother. Are you sure the papers said Prince Remy and not Princess Sophia? Maybe he was having a bad day and got confused. I hear that happens to older people sometimes.” “Remy, stop.” Queen Abigail let out a quick giggle and there was a rustle of silk as she settled on a box next to where he was sitting on the ground. “Prince Xavier is only seven years older than you and by all accounts, he has amazing control of his faculties.” “That’s what his PR team says, but have you seen any evidence of that?” Remy shook his head. “I don’t understand why Father agreed to this,” he added softly. “If things are tough, I could get a job…” “Don’t be ridiculous. You know how fortunate we are. Bentley is a prosperous country, and financial stability is never going to be a concern for our people, for us, or for you, married or not.” “Then why?” Possibly picking up his concern, Daisy gave a flick of her long tail and disappeared off his lap. No matter how fast she moved, she was still very careful with her long claws around him. She headed to the hideout Remy had made for her out of stone slabs, probably looking for the mice that frequented the stables. The Bentley royal castle never needed cats to take care of any rodent problem. Remy’s lizards took care of them all. His lap free, Remy swiveled on his butt so he could face his mother, wrapping his arms around his knees. It was said that he took after his mother more than his father in looks. They shared the same slender build, high cheekbones, and sharp chin. But where Remy’s brown hair with blond highlights always looked like it needed cutting, or at least the attention of a solid hairbrush, his mother’s was immaculately wound in beautiful braids around her head – reminding Remy of the crown she wore for state occasions. “Is there any reason I have to get married right now?” He asked. “You have a perfectly studly heir in my brother, Pierre, who has already given you two grandsons and a granddaughter with his wonderful Emily. My younger sisters, Sophia and Hyacinth, are almost of marriageable age – are you sure Xavier can’t wait for one of them? Sophia is barely ever seen unless she’s on a horse. I understand he is much the same, so he’d appreciate that.” His mother glanced around, making sure they were alone. Barely anyone
