I don’t know how I always seem to wind up in the worst situations. It’s like I’ve got the worst case of bad luck imaginable. I was just walking home from school. Mom said she’d pick me up and we’d have a girls afternoon together but she never showed and instead of heading home like I normally did, I waited like an idiot. I knew better. She loved to make grand plans together but she never showed up. I don’t know why I believed her this time. My breathing picked up as panic flooded my system. They’d been following me since I left the school grounds. I guess they caught up to me at a light because just after I crossed the street, one of them ducked in front of me to cut me off, surprising me. I hadn’t even heard them approach. I’d been so deep in the internal fight with my mom that I hadn’t been paying attention. I never walked home alone, usually Allie and Riley walked with me… One of them reached for me and I jerked away, stumbling forward. It brought me too close to his friend and he grabbed my arms, dragging me against him. “Don’t be rude, honey. We’re in an MC. Show us a good time, yeah?” I dropped my weight, ripping my arms away from him as I fell to the ground. “Don’t touch me!” His other friend snickered. “Don’t think she likes you, man.” His grin was evil and sent a chill down my spine. “That’s okay. I don’t need her to like me.” He reached for me again and I flinched. No way could I fight all three of them. I was trapped here, all because I decided to listen to another empty promise. I always seemed to learn my lessons the hard way. I waited for them to grab me but a resounding click of metal on metal caught my attention and the attention of the guys surrounding me. A shadow approached and cement filled my stomach. I seriously could not catch a break. This guy looked worse than the other three and I couldn’t even see his face properly. He was cast in darkness and he loomed over the rest. And he was armed, a gun pointed at the man standing closest to me. “Touch her and I’m gonna decorate that building with your blood,” he seethed. The three guys looked hesitantly between each other before shoring up their courage. They straightened and stepped around me towards the shadowy figure, one of them pulling out a small switchblade and flicking it open. “Why don’t you fight us like a real man?” I saw the white of his teeth in the limited light as he grinned coldly. He tucked his gun away without question and stalked closer. I should be running, they weren’t paying attention to me, but I was glued to my spot on the ground like a deer in headlights, my eyes riveted to the terrifying figure. He even moved like a shadow; liquid darkness, silent and deadly, and I could barely track him in the night. He struck like a snake, without warning and with more power than my attackers were expecting. He hit the first guy in the middle of the chest so hard that I heard something crack and the guy hit the ground in an instant, out cold. The second, the one with the knife, lunged towards him from behind and he jerked back his elbow, hitting the guy in the windpipe. He dropped the knife, clutching at his throat as he gasped, and the shadow spun, punching him in the diaphragm so hard that he curled around the punch and collapsed to the ground. The last guy looked nervously between his friends and the shadow man. Instead of attacking, he spun and tried to flee. He didn’t get far before the knife his friend brought was buried in his shoulder, the force of it knocking him to his knees. The shadowy figure approached leisurely, grabbing the handle of the knife and twisting, making the guy shriek and burst into tears, dropping to his hands. The man whispered something before straightening. It almost looked like he might let the guy go but he spun and kicked him right in the face, knocking him out. Self preservation finally kicked in and I shoved to my feet, turning to run. His hand wrapped around my wrist and I screamed, trying to jerk away from him. “Quinn, stop. It’s me.” I froze, glancing over my shoulder. “Zayne?” Zayne was Allie’s older brother. He’s always been super protective of her and it sometimes passed off to me and Riley too. I hadn’t seen him in a few years.
