Like a zoo attraction everyone comes to admire. Coming here, this isolated college tucked into the forest, is the freest I’ve ever been. I get to wake up when I want to, go to bed when I want. Wear what I want. There is no schedule, telling me when to eat, when to get dressed. Nothing. It’s up to me to take care of myself. Find trouble on my own. And I found it. The crisp wind makes the small flyways around my face shift as I sew a button on a dress. That’s what I do. I make clothes. My favorite is ball gowns. Momma got me a sewing machine when I was small. She understood about having clipped wings. Father loves to collect pretty things, leaving them in a glass box to be admired. Only bringing them out to show, never to love. Momma told me to create something beautiful, to express myself through my art. When she handed me a sewing machine and a book on the art, she freed me. If only for a couple of hours a day. My fingers work smoothly and quickly as I sit under the tree outside The Misfits’ home. The Misfits—I had no clue what I was getting into when I caught the eye of the mafia prince. My only objective at the time was to take control of my own life. Find my own freedom. But Vance… He wasn’t really in my cards. The man that’s so feared, no one dares to make eye contact with him, is gentle with me. His words are soft, eyes burning hot every time he looks at me. As if I’m the one weakness he can afford in life. Unfortunately, he is not a weakness I can have. No matter how much I want to. Things between us have been tense since I’ve paraded other men in front of him. To push him away. And since I took a bullet for Brixley, everything has been wrong. I don’t regret it, how could I? I may have a scar, but she could have lost her life. My hand flies to the nasty scar on my face at the memory, turning my mood sour. It doesn’t matter, though, because I need to pack soon. Summer break is two days from now, and Momma, she’s not good. Breast cancer, stage four. They didn’t catch it in time. It’s spread everywhere in her body, making treatment not an option. Instead of going with Brixley this summer, I’m going home. Somewhere I promised myself and Momma that if I ever escaped, I’d never return. But someone has to take care of her. I’m all she’s got. And if I were dying, I’d want someone to hold my hand, so I know I’m not alone. Walking into the house, I take the stairs up to my room. Closing the door quietly, I rip the cap from my head. Sighing as I brace myself on the vanity. Look up, Primrose. Embrace your new appearance. My hands shake as I slowly raise my face to the mirror. It’s like an out-of-body experience. As
