With her family on the verge of bankruptcy, the only way she can avoid an unwanted marriage is by asking for the help of their creditor, the Duke of Whitewell. Neil was not raised to show sympathy. But seeing Lydia in distress melts his frozen heart and his assistance comes in the form of an invitation. What better chance to find a wealthy match than his house party? Until Neil hears Lydia’s lullaby. The familiarity in her voice brings the light to his once dark soul. But the moment their love is about to blossom, Neil sees darkness looming over his beloved. A hidden foe plotting against their bliss and possibly their lives… PROLOGUE The sun was high in the sky, and as the horses’ hooves pounded along the track, clouds of dust flew into the air. Neil coughed and rubbed at his eyes with one hand, holding onto his horse’s reins with the other. The heat was making him uncomfortable and doing nothing to ease the knot of anxiety that had been lodged firmly in his stomach since they had arrived that morning. His father rode ahead of him. He slowed to a walk and began chatting to the gentleman they had come to visit. He seemed impervious to the oppressive heat; he was impervious to almost anything, Neil thought. Nothing ruffled him whereas Neil felt awkward in most situations, especially when his father was present. He gently nudged his horse into a trot, trying to catch up with the men in front of him. Much as he would have preferred to ride at a distance behind with only his thoughts for company, he knew that his father would be expecting him to be involved in the conversation. He was here to learn, after all, not dawdle along by himself. “So, these horses,” the Duke was saying as Neil moved into within earshot of the conversation. “The Viscount says they’re nothing but trouble. I’m expecting a good price!” The gentleman next to him, a sturdy-looking man with chestnut-colored hair and a weather-beaten face, gave a slight nod in response to this. “I’m sure you are, Your Grace,” he replied. Neil wondered what the man was really thinking. Hardly anyone dared to speak their mind in front of a man like his father, but no doubt this man, the steward of the estate they were visiting, was already drawing his own conclusions about the Duke of Whitewell. The Duke gave a snort and kicked his horse into a faster trot. “Come along then, man,” he barked over his shoulder as he took the lead. “I haven’t got all day to be dallying about here like a young miss on a pleasure ride!” “Good lass, Molly,” Neil whispered as he gently pushed his own horse on too, to match his father’s quicker pace. He could see sweat beginning to form on her fine black coat. The horses would need to rest soon. They turned a corner and reached a paddock. The grass was parched and brown, its lushness burnt out by the long, hot summer that was mercifully nearly at an end. The steward halted his horse at the gate and jumped down, looping the reins around a fencepost. The Duke followed suit, and Neil did the same. He secured Molly’s reins and gave her a pat. “Leave that horse alone, boy, and come with us.” The Duke’s voice cut through his thoughts, and he whirled around, his stomach lurching in that familiar way. He knew that his father thought he was too soft with animals, and he had given him yet another reason to criticize him by dawdling there with Molly rather than
