Chapter OneIsabella ignored the piles of boards, logs, and materials needed to build the log cabins Cassidy and David insisted they had to store to finish building their homes. Having them settle on her land after they were transformed into werewolves wasn't what she'd expected, but she agreed to having them join her. They were members of her pack and the two forced her into being the leader.With Max at her side, she tilted her head to stare at the full moon. It had been a month since she found Cassidy in the woods after the blond had been attacked. It was when Cassidy had been infected, turning her into a creature of myth. Before this happened, no one believed werewolves, vampires, magic, deities, and everything mentioned in stories were real.The rare news coming on televisions mentioned this, but in the area of the country where they lived made it hard for anyone to believe what they heard. Living in the wilds of the northwest area of Montana, those who lived in the Town of Unknown knew the name fit their home. Most never knew it existed, and the people who found the town didn't stay long.Who wanted to when there were no tourist areas nearby, and the people who lived in Unknown didn't enjoy travelers? They might be polite to those who visited, but the hesitance to welcome them made sure everyone who didn't belong moved on.“What do you think, Max?” Isabella looked at her dog, running her hand across his back. The infection transformed him, causing Max to increase in size. Being a mixed breed before he was bitten, the changes made him a terror. His fangs lengthened, muscles firmed across his body, and his lope matched those of his pack mates when they learned the speed they could run once they transformed into wolves. Isabella wondered how Max's intelligence changed, but she struggled to prove he was smarter, since Max's personality was the same as when he was normal.She grinned, amused at the powerful bark coming from him as he sat next to her and appeared to bathe in the lunar energy washing over them. “I know. We'll run soon. Cassidy left, not wanting to wait for us. We'll find her once I finish what I came out here to do.”Isabella stepped away, crossing the yard to grasp the ladder leading to her roof. The plunging darkness washed away by the electronic lights interested her. Whatever was affecting electricity appeared to have increased, causing the power to fail until it stuttered into life.When she reached the place where she enjoyed resting while staring at the sky and into the forest, Isabella turned to peer towards town. She grinned, noticing Max gazing at her while his tail swayed across the ground. “You're worried about Sheriff Margaret, aren't you? She hasn't visited after being killed and returning to life as a vampire. It's something we need to take care of, don't we, Maximilian?”Isabella nodded as Max barked, answering her. Before she said anything further, Isabella sighed as the sky flared with light. It didn't last as the electricity tower exploded, causing the power to leave the town. “Lower World! David is at the clinic, which means he might need us. Terror has to be spreading as everyone realizes their world will never be the same. Losing electricity had plunged us into what our ancestors dealt with. I know we're far from civilization, but having power kept everyone connected to what happened outside our home.” Isabella nodded at Max, watching him tilt his head to the sides as he listened to her. “You know this is the truth, don't you?”She stepped to the edge, flexed her legs, and pushed off. A grunt escaped her as she landed, causing her braided black hair to slap against her. Isabella hurried inside the log cabin she'd built after leaving the town and settling outside it. The peace she wanted at being alone was something she no longer had because Cassidy and David stayed with her while they built the cabins Isabella insisted they needed for themselves.Isabella might have agreed to be their pack leader, but this didn't mean she wanted them to live with her in the log cabin she built for herself.
