Just click on the image above! ⇧ CHAPTER ONE “Would you do me the honor of a dance, Miss Ashton?” “You have barely left my thoughts since our last conversation, Miss Ashton.” “I was looking forward to making your acquaintance, Miss Ashton.” Sophia Ashton’s introduction into proper Society could not have started any smoother. This was only the third ball of the Season, and her dance card had never been empty. With several bachelors vying for her attention, she could even afford the luxury of politely declining requests from less desirable suitors because of prior engagements. This was beneficial in not one but two aspects: first and foremost, it saved her the displeasure of dancing with men who could not be considered true gentlemen, to begin with. Second, it helped further boost her social capital. The Season’s most desirable lady would surely have no problems receiving a beneficial proposal by its end. Sophia could barely wait for that day to arrive. As a proper young lady, however, she only allowed that enthusiasm to bubble to the surface in perfect moderation. A coy smile here, a perfectly timed curtsy there, the slightest brushing of her fingers over a gentleman’s hand when he escorted her towards the dance floor. She had been preparing herself for marriage all her life, after all. Her parents had afforded her a fine education, and her governess and tutors ensured she developed the proper skills and manners to shine in Society. But Sophia knew that if her darling parents were still alive, she would not be trying this hard to be perfect in every single way that counted. She would be able to unwind, simply enjoy the Season, and wait for love to arrive. Her parents were not with her any longer, however, and she had been taken into her aunt and uncle’s custody before she had even turned twelve.
