I grumble under my breath as I try to focus on laying out my clothes for my interview tomorrow, but someone is making such a loud ruckus upstairs that I can’t concentrate at all. What shitty timing for a new neighbor to move in. I have an interview for a new job—an important one with a consulting company that I need to land in order to pay my bills. I have to be up bright and early in the morning, and I have to look good and be able to think clearly enough to answer any questions that might be asked of me. But thanks to the assholes upstairs, who have been making enough noise that it sounds like an elephant is being dragged across the floor, I won’t be rested and prepared. I try to block it out for as long as I can. I even plug in my sound machine to try and drown out the noise, but nothing works. Normally, I would let something like this go, but tonight I just can’t. It’s already late, and I am getting increasingly agitated by the moment—agitated enough to march straight up there and knock on the door. The building manager had told me a few weeks ago that some ultra-rich European couple would be moving into the building soon. At first, I didn’t believe him because why in the world would someone wealthy move into this particular building when there were so many better buildings in the city to live out of? But when I started to see the literal tons of moving trucks pull up alongside the building, unloading more boxes than I could count, I started to buy into the idea. The building super must have rented out the entire upper floor to this rich couple because there is no way that many boxes of stuff could have fit in an apartment the size of mine. Loaded or not, it doesn’t give them the right to cause a noise disturbance at this hour. I climb the stairwell to the next floor and hesitate for just a moment before banging my fist on the door. I’m in my pajamas, and I don’t even care. The only thing that I care about is being able to finish prepping for my interview and getting a good night’s sleep. Which currently, these people are interfering with. But when the door opens, I am not met with what I expected. I expected to see the snotty face of a spoiled, wealthy housewife or maybe the arrogant scowl of an entitled billionaire. Instead, I find myself face-to-face with a small girl. The little girl stares up at me as she holds a mangy-looking cat in her arms. The poor feline looks as if it is being squeezed to death but in a much-loved sort of way and not by a cruel hand. Its fur is all clumped together, and its nails need trimming. I’m not even a cat person at all, but even I know that much. I wonder how wealthy or intelligent this couple actually is if they can’t even manage proper pet care. “Hi,” I say as I bend down a little to get at eye level with the girl. She can’t be more than five or six; kindergarten age would be my guess. “Can I talk to your parents, please?” She tilts her head to one side as if my simple request has somehow confused her. “Do you mean my dad?” “Your dad or your mom,” I say with an irritated smile. “I’m not picky.” “My mom is gone,” she says with a frown. “And I don’t think she is ever coming back.” I see her grip the cat even closer. The creature must love this girl dearly because no other cat would put up with it as calmly as this one is. It doesn’t make a yowl or even try to scratch at her. It simply lets itself be hugged as its legs dangle in the air. “Okay then, can I please speak with your dad?” The girl nods and turns around, scuffling away on her slippers toward the hallway and leaving the apartment door open so that I can peer inside. There are boxes everywhere, and I was right about this apartment being a lot bigger than mine. “Fish! Fish, come back here!” The tiny voice squeals as if the world is ending, and I see the cat racing down the hallway, making a beeline for the door. Instinctively, I bend down and grab it, not sure whether I am doing the animal a favor or condemning it to more unwanted hugging. Within seconds, the little girl comes running toward the door again, empty-handed and panicked, as she races after her cat. But this time, she isn’t alone. There is a man right beside her, an intoxicatingly handsome one that makes everything I was going to say fall right out of my head. “Fish!” the girl exclaims as she yanks the cat from my hands with an overabundance of excitement. “Wait a second, your cat’s name is Fish?” I am obviously distracted by several things at once, not the least of which is the extraordinarily handsome man that is now standing in the doorway. But I can’t let a moment like this slip by—if this tiny girl has named her
