CHAPTER 1 Blood welled in the thin cut on my finger as I cursed under my breath. I glanced at the door to make sure Caleb wasn’t home from work before focusing my power on the wound. The tissue melded together as heat radiated through my hand. While I rarely used my magic anymore, it occasionally came in handy. If it could help me get this espresso machine put together, that would be a miracle. The small appliance was proving to be my undoing, and I blew an errant strand of hair from my mouth. My long, red hair was slipping from my ponytail, so I refastened it before returning to my daunting task. I was trying to insert the next piece of apparatus when the door slammed, shaking the small shelves affixed to my living room wall. Caleb entered our small kitchen and threw his keys on the brown counter. They slid along the laminate surface as I appraised my son. At nineteen, he was in excellent shape and was the spitting image of my ex. His brown eyes had green flecks, similar to my eye color, that were only noticeable when he was angry. They looked hazel as he ran a jerky hand through his dark shaggy hair. I placed the metal handle I was attempting to connect on the counter and flipped my hair to my back. “Honey, are you alright?” His lips thinned. “You lied to me, Shannon.” It was always a bad sign when he called me by my first name. I tried to recall any recent omissions, but nothing noteworthy came to mind. “Is this about Preston’s party? I told you there would be no drinking...” “You’re a witch,” he accused. My heart stuttered in my chest, and my eyes refused to blink. I prayed he was using the term as a curse word. That I had done something to upset him, but doubted I was that lucky. “Why would you say that?” He leaned against the counter. He had an athletic build, and the muscles in his upper arms popped. “How could you keep me in the dark about my heritage? About the council, the hunters, and the supernatural world?” I stepped back as if he had slapped me. Over twenty years had passed since I ran from the pain of living in Spirit Falls. I hadn’t returned once, and I had married a human, so the council would have no reason to test my son. “How? Who told you about the council?” My voice cracked as I spoke. He slammed his hand on the counter and turned away. He stopped beside the dining table with four chairs and a cream table runner. Our apartment was small, but it was one of the nicer ones in the building. “A representative of the council contacted me. Her name is Kliona, but she was just a messenger.” Of all the people the council could have sent. “Kliona? Are you serious? Do not trust that woman. You have no idea of the forces you are dealing with. We can leave Cape Cod. Move to another state. We just need...” Caleb looked at me like I had grown a second head. “Are you fucking serious? I want to learn about the hunters. I want to be one.” I swatted the pieces of espresso machine across the counter, and into the stainless-steel sink. The metal clanked, echoing through the kitchen. “We are not going to Spirit Falls. The council is responsible for your grandparents’ death. I went through hell in that town and I would rather pull my fingernails out than return home.” Caleb was silent for some time. “You never talk about my grandparents. I have never even seen a picture of them. Why?” I unfastened the green apron I had on and pulled it over my head, catching my red ponytail, before placing it on the counter. “They died when I was young.” “They were hunters!” he hissed. Having Kliona throw me under the bus was not a surprise. I hadn’t had any respect for that woman when I was a child, but I had honestly believed she wouldn’t stoop so low. What had put me back on her radar? “I know what they were. I lived that life. Waiting every night for them to come home. Relieved when they did and mad that they put the hunt above me. You have no concept of what that does to a child. The night the council rep showed up and my babysitter called me to the living room. I knew what had happened. They chose the fight over me. I never wanted that for you.” “I am not a child.”
