I lean back on the bar, watching Devon stand beside Jace on the other side of the room. Both men’s gaze briefly slide to catch mine and the tightness returns tenfold. I feel like I’m going to puke. The after effects of last night’s attack haven't died down much. Everyone’s still on their toes, waiting until disaster strikes again. And with Beth in hospital, we know we’ve run out of the good luck that kept us safe all these months. We’re now vulnerable and in the line of attack. Not until Jace mates with Beth when she gets better. If she gets better. We still don’t know what exactly made her ill enough to go to the ICU, hooked up on IVs. Jace said he can’t wrap his head around everything so fast, and even now, he looks as if he doesn't know what to say to his pack. What is there for him to say? That he doesn't want to mate with the only woman who has the power to make us stronger to fight back against Black Valley? He’ll be forcibly removed as Alpha. The Silver Moon pack will be more vulnerable than ever. And the life I built here will quickly crumble. I look at Devon, and he gives me a mean smirk full of promise. He knows what I’m thinking. That I’m trying to find a solution. A way out of this. Except he knows that there isn't one. I look away, hiding the next thoughts that flash through my mind. Thoughts that aren’t full of uncertainty and helplessness. Thoughts that form a hard casing around my hurting heart. I’m determined to get my pack’s land back from Black Valley. In this fight, I need to win not only because of Jace, but also my family. Yet, I can’t come out with my identity. It’s only Jace and Devon who knows which pack I’m from, but neither of them know I was the Alpha’s daughter. Or that I want revenge from what was taken from me. From my unborn child. I may be at a loss, I may be a nobody, but I will take on Black Valley. I have the element of surprise, which gives me an advantage. Black Valley will never see me coming. If only I was less pregnant…if only I was less in love with Jace as well. The days I used to dream of eating lobsters and chilling back in my apartment feel like a lifetime ago. “Listen up everyone.” Jace crosses his arms over his chest, widening his stance. His forehead is wrinkled with stress marks and his jaw ticks as he roams his eyes over all of us. The room quietens down, filling with tension and anticipation. “We know Black Valley will strike us a second time, but not when. We don’t have much time to prepare.” The members of Silver Moon look at each other, a low buzz forming as people murmur among themselves. “That doesn't mean we don’t defend ourselves,” he adds, his voice deep and strong. “I want you all to gear up with everything you’ve got. Bring out the weapons and your claws and be alert at all times. If you see or hear anything out of the ordinary, you tell me and you tell me immediately. We’re going to give our all in this fight. On the next full moon, we’ll be something new, more powerful, and untouchable.” With that, Jace swivels on his heels and walks into the corridor leading to his office. Devon and a few others follow, probably to strategize how to best defend ourselves in the meantime. I blink at the space Jace just vacated, surprised at what he just said. The next full moon is when I’m supposed to mate with Devon…does that mean Jace is going to mate with Beth, too? Of course he is. And I have as much choice in my mating as he does. I press my hand to my mouth, swallowing the sick feeling clawing its way up my throat. Leaning my head down on the cold wooden bar, I do my breathing exercises again. Goddammit, when did everything get so complicated? “Kinda scared to walk into that room.” Danika leans forward on her forearms towards me, her head tilted to the door of Jace’s office. “Jace looks like he’s about to pop a nerve. For good reason, but sheesh he’s scary.” I smile as she slides a plate of pretzel bites towards me. “I love you,” I whisper and pop one into my mouth, and then another before the first is even swallowed. I haven’t eaten all night and haven’t slept thanks to my mind running a thousand miles per minute. I feel drained. In fact, I could fall asleep right over this bar if given the chance. Or better yet, I’ll crawl under it and have a good cry because I desperately do need that. Instead, I focus on stuffing bites into my mouth until my cheeks pop out. “Hungry much?” Danika laughs. “I always get this way during a full moon.” I shrug. “Also need the energy for another fight. Do you have a cow in the kitchen? Because I could eat that entire thing by myself in one sitting,” I laugh, making it sound like a joke, except it isn't. Pregnancy makes me insatiable for both good greasy
