Reader’s discretion is advised. KALI There’s nothing quite as disconcerting as waking up somewhere unexpected. I should have pieced together what happened rather quickly, but sunlight hitting the cozy blue walls and the fluffy white duvet wrapped around me felt wrong deep in my bones. I shouldn’t be here. My chest tightened. If I was tucked safely in this bed, then something bad happened. I pushed back the blankets and stared down at my clothes. Jeans and a sweater. Where were my comfies? Why don’t I remember falling asleep? I rubbed my eyes as if that would wake up my brain and get the memories flowing. It didn’t work, but I focused enough to recognize an unfamiliar sensation where my bond usually was. Before the trickle of panic could turn into a full-fledged attack, I took stock of what I knew. This was Saige’s house. The guestroom had been mine before I moved in with Rainer and Tracker. So why was I here now? No. Focus on the facts. The sun was out. It was morning. I didn’t go home last night. Why? No! I took a deep breath, focusing on my senses. The house was too quiet. I checked the clock on the nightstand. Just after eight. By now, the guys should all be up and moving. Nadia’s squeals and giggles should be blending in with the sounds of breakfast. Natasha would be over with Benji and Cora and whatever guys were off duty. I went to the door and peered down the hall. Most of the doors were open, so they were awake, but where? Each of my steps down the stairs sounded too loud. “Kali?” Hannah called as she came from the kitchen. “We were wondering when you’d be up.” Her smile was too cheerful, forced. “What’s going on?” I followed her back to where Natasha was feeding Cora and Nadia. She shot me a smile before returning her attention to the babies. “The guys got called out,” Hannah offered as she went to the fridge. “We made smoothies. Do you want one?” “Sure.” They were trying too hard to act normal. Why? She handed me a reusable bottle with pink liquid inside. Good, it wasn’t one of the gross green ones the guys preferred. They swore they couldn’t taste the kale, spinach, and broccoli, but they were lying to themselves. “All the guys got called? For patrol?” I lowered myself into a seat at the kitchen table. As far as I knew, that never happened. They shared a look before Hannah replied. “Yeah. I guess there was an issue last night that required more hands.” An issue? Was that why Rainer and Tracker never came for me? Oh. “Because of the body?” Natasha wiped Nadia’s face. “We don’t know for sure, but probably.” I should be more upset about the idea of someone dying, especially by the hands of the beast. The one that could have killed me too. But we didn’t have any more information, and stressing while waiting would drive me crazy, so I moved on to more pressing matters. “How did I end up in the guestroom?” “Daniel carried you up after you fell asleep on the couch,” Hannah explained. “He stopped by to let us know we’d be on our own for the night, and since you were already sleeping, we didn’t want to wake you. No one was at your house, so . . .” “Masie wasn’t there either?” She shook her head, suddenly distracted by the babies. “You guys don’t know what happened?” Natasha signed and shook her head. “They didn’t tell us anything except there was an issue that required all the guards.” “And Masie?” I asked. “And Ryan,” Hannah added. I rubbed at the spot on my chest that felt wrong. “Something’s different with my bond.” They shared another look, and I wanted to shout for them to stop. They obviously knew details they weren’t sharing. “Bad or good different?” Natasha asked. I closed my eyes and focused precisely on the feeling. Anxiety, but that was pretty normal these days. Confusion and fear, but those had also been there from the beginning. A pull toward my mates, a need to be with them. Physically closer. That was newer, but it, too, had been growing recently—not just this morning. What about each of the connections? Rainer and Tracker
