Sulfites or tannins… one of them always fucks me up. That’s why I’m usually a vodka girl. But bone-crushing grief has a way of stripping back every boundary. An engine hums to life outside, idling, and a heavy groan rattles in my throat, barely making it past my cracked lips. How long had I been out? The question circles the drain of my consciousness, but I can’t bring myself to open my eyes. Not yet. I try to orient myself in space and time without visual cues—sore back, rough carpet on my face, bright light turning my eyelids crimson. It all adds up to me passing out on Em’s living room floor. Again. I suck in a breath and try to muster the strength to get off the floor, to face another day without her, but I choke on my own saliva, and each wheezing cough spikes that jackhammer in my brain to maximum. The diesel outside piles on, engine kicking into a higher gear, and I finally pry open my weighted lids to find a pair of yellow eyes staring plaintively down at me. Ah. Not an idling truck but the insistent pleading purr of a disgruntled orange cat. I blink and those yellow slitted eyes hold more than the agitation of hunger. More than the usual feline arrogance. The shimmering hard edges of disappointment glare at me. “Yeah, I know, cat,” I grumble while peeling my cheek off the high-pile carpet of Em’s living room. Arranging myself so I’m more upright but still seated, I wait for the room to stop spinning. The bright white walls, doused in afternoon light, and lush warm cream fabrics of Em’s furniture and drapes are all so intrinsically her. Light and bright. Warm and welcoming. It’s why I didn’t want to open my eyes. Every inch of the townhouse buzzes with her. This should have never happened. If anyone deserved to live, it’s Em. Emerald and Jade Sisters A year apart One born light The other born dark. In every conceivable way. She should be here. The good one. The fun and happy sister. The one everyone liked. Not the fuck up. The outcast. All I wanted was to pave my way, make my own destiny. I never expected Em to follow me here or get caught up in my problems. The bioremediation team had done a good job of removing the “biological material” as the invoice stated. There wasn’t a trace of blood left in the bathroom. Not a hint of that strange sweet-and-metallic scent which had lingered far after the coroner took my sister’s body away. Now there’s only the burning fumes of disinfectant and a sour bottom note of B.O. It’s been a while since I’ve had a proper shower. I stare at the invoice on my sister’s coffee table, and while I get my legs under me, remind myself to email a copy to Em’s homeowner’s insurance so they can reimburse me. The movies always depict the surviving family member on their hands and knees, bucket and old-timey bristle brush scraping against the floor, doing little but smearing red around. But in reality, there are services to deal with that sort of thing, so long as you’re willing to pay. Mrrow. Chonk’s persistent plea has
