Yeah, I was cocky when it came to gambling. Go big or go home had been my motto since I was a teenager. My four older brothers would’ve never respected me if I showed fear about anything. But the smirk on Cesar’s face made me nervous. All week I’d hung out at his blackjack table. Sometimes I cleaned house, and other times I lost my shorts. If I took another card, I’d likely bust. “Gonna take all day to decide, homie?” He grinned, showing his pearly whites. That couldn’t be good. I’d been studying his tells and trying to memorize them. He was a fucking good dealer, but I’d been easily distracted when a particular server breezed by, leaving her intoxicating perfume behind, so I was confident I’d missed some crucial expressions on Cesar’s stupid face. Are you screwing with me, homie? “I’ll be off in ten minutes?” A warm breath tickled my ear. “Why so early?” I thought I had another hour of gambling time. Cesar twisted his lips and arched his brow like he wanted some of what I had. “Okay, fine,” she snipped. “I’ll wait for you in the lobby… Or maybe I’ll just go home.” I grabbed her by the wrist before she left and turned toward her. “No, you won’t. I’ll meet you in ten. Now blow on my hand.” I waved the cards in front of her. She put her pink lips together and blew ever so softly, but the devilish glint in her brown depths negated the gentleness. “Win big, so you can buy me dinner.” “Absolutely, babe.” I got hard eyeing her as she sashayed away. Good thing no one could see my crotch under the table. “So you’re tapping that, homie?” I got myself under control and faced the table. Shit, she was a goddess. I showed my cards on the table. “Eighteen.” “Really? Okay.” He shook his head. “You didn’t answer my question.” “A gentleman never brags.” He chuckled as he revealed his card. “Seventeen.” He gave himself another card. “Seven. Bust.” I threw my head back and laughed heartily. “I can’t believe it! I honestly thought you had a ten or an ace under the jack. Fuck.” I put my hand on my chest and continued to laugh. “Seems the lady brought you good luck.” “Funny, she’s the opposite of good.” Except for this time, she’d helped me keep my shorts. “I know, Jinx. I’ve been trying to get with her for weeks. When you swooped in, I lost momentum with her. After you leave, I’m jumping back in the game.” “You sound a little bitter, homie.” My eye twitched as I sized him up. He didn’t seem to be Jinx’s type, but what did I know? I’d only been hooking up with her for a few days. I kept it casual, with no strings and shit. “I am. She’s a sweet little honey.” He put his elbows on the table and leaned toward me. “She a good fuck, homie?” “I’ll take my payout now.” Rage smoldered in my chest for some strange reason. He backed away. “Don’t mean any disrespect. Just thought you didn’t care about her.” He slid my winnings over. “I don’t care what you do with her when I’m gone. Until then, keep your hands off.” He nodded appreciatively. “All right, man. Thanks. Maybe put in a good word for me.” He winked. I threw my hand up and left, my jaw tight, hands in fists. Something about him showing interest in Jinx pissed me off. I didn’t care what she did or to who. I didn’t own her. Would never claim her. Since Cobra stole Karma from me, I vowed never to be stupid enough to give my heart away again. I would be the single Knight for life. No one would ever make me break that promise. I stopped in the bathroom for a quick piss and went to the lobby. I was a little early, so I sat by the entrance on a luxurious leather chair and checked my messages. Lady M texted me a couple of times a day since I’d taken off on my road trip. It was a little annoying being a grown-ass man. But I knew she only wanted to be sure I wasn’t feeding my shredded body to the wildlife on the highway somewhere.
