It was the same every time they stuck her with needles, poking her veins for blood. She was left feeling listless without the ability to move. She’d learned to simply count backwards from one thousand because, by the time she was in the five hundreds, the pressure weighing her down was prone to lift. She got all the way down into the three hundreds once… but only once. She’d been in the facility for nearly a month. A few miles outside of Silverbay, hidden in the forests of Colorado. They’d poked her five times a week. So, out of twenty times of feeling as though her body was a prison she’d never get to move again, only one of those times had lasted very long. “That’s good, right?” she asked herself, staring at the ceiling. Her bedroom wasn’t like the rest of the place, which was plastered in grey cement and seemed made to drive a regular person insane. The ceiling in her little pod, her rooms, her cell, was painted a light peach. She supposed it was meant to be soothing, but she wondered at the choice. It was like sleeping inside a peach cobbler. It kept making her hungry. They fed her three times a day—small meals—as though they couldn’t afford anything more, which she thought was probably bullshit. It was an intimidation tactic meant to remind her that she was under their control. She’d signed a slip of paper when she was first brought in because she needed the money and had thought this was a legitimate medical trial, but she hadn’t realized she’d signed up for being locked in this imitation-apartment indefinitely. And soon he would show up. The worst part of her day. He would bring his rattling medical table and roll it in as though it was meant to be something to gawk at, then he would pull up a low stool and sit very close to her where she lay on her bed. He’d shine a light in her eye, pat her arm to find a vein, and draw blood. And then more blood. She’d thought, more than once, of slapping the glasses off his face, but had refrained. Mostly because she had self-control, but also because he scared her. His face never changed. His eyes seemed dull and lifeless. For the past month he hadn’t said a word to her. She hated him. He must know that she hadn’t been aware that this was what awaited her. He must know that, even though they had her signature, they didn’t actually have her consent to tap her blood five times a week after they’d filled her with God only knew what type of developing medications. She didn’t want to self-punish. She didn’t believe in it. But she was so damn angry at herself for not reading the fine print. Who trusted big pharma? Who was desperate enough to do that? “This girl,” she grumbled, closing her eyes. It was a matter of minutes now and, sure enough, there it was: the sound of her soundproof door sliding open and a second later the excruciatingly loud noise of the cart as it was pulled into the small living room. The noise grew impossibly louder as the cart’s journey continued through the doorway of the bedroom. And there he was. Mister Glum. Mister Let-Me-Bleed-You-Dry. Mister I-Couldn’t-Care-Less. Was he even human? He looked human enough, wearing slacks and a comfortable sweater in uniform colors, though every day was a different color. Often dark blue, sometimes emerald green, a few times all black or dark grey. Today, he wore a burnt amber sort of color that made his green eyes really pop. He had light brown hair that was annoyingly wavy. The types of waves she knew were natural and that all he had to do was run his hand through them and they’d fall perfectly every time. He looked quite a bit older than she was but cute in a domesticated sort of way, wearing black-rimmed glasses and a never-smile on his nicely shaped mouth. Human enough. She wasn’t. In fact, the newly discovered wolf within growled softly at the sight of the nameless intruder. Because he was intruding, even though technically the space—all the space in this place—was his to roam. Including the space assigned to her. Or especially that space. It was enough to drive someone mad. It was time to shake things up a bit. Try to test the invisible boundaries that had been put up between them on day one. Time to boldly go where she had never gone before. And so, she drew a breath and said, “Hello.” It was the first time she had ever spoken to him. He didn’t look at her, focusing instead on the vein he was about to stick his needle into. He started slapping the fold of her arm, teasing the blue underneath to show itself. She noticed that he didn’t slap quite so vigorously after she’d spoken, so perhaps breaking the silence had warranted some sort of response after all. “Are you not allowed
