I let out a massive sigh as I grabbed my purse, slinging it over my shoulder. Regardless of how excited I was to have landed a residency at the Sans Verta, I was always ready for the day to end. “Hey, Dr. Preston, can I have a word?” Dr. Brewer’s voice echoed through the empty room, and I spun around, forcing a smile on my face. “What’s up?” “I know that you’re off, but I need your assistance.” There was a fatigued look to his dark brown eyes, and I recognized the weathered look on his face as something that many older doctors had—being in healthcare wasn’t easy. “Do you want me to stay late?” I forced myself to sound more thrilled about it than I actually was—and it’s not that I didn’t love my job... I just really liked getting some adequate sleep. “It’s a little different than that, to be honest. I need you to make a house call with me.” “A house call?” My eyebrows shot up. “I didn’t think we did that sort of thing.” It finally hits me that he’s holding a black leather bag, slung over his slender shoulders. “Well, if you’re going to be at this hospital and work for me, then you’re going to make house calls,” he grunted, nodding toward the exit. “And the sooner that we get to where we’re going, the less likely we’ll be calling the morgue.” “Uh, okay,” I muttered, pushing a few stray locks of my dark, curly hair out of my face. “And are you sure this is in accordance with the hospital policy?” I can’t help but ask the question. I mean, I read the handbook over and over... There was nothing about house calls. “Just come on,” he snapped, slipping out of the exit. I followed him, the warm California air filling my lungs. I had relocated from Washington, and it was a nice change, but a very warm one. I picked up my pace to follow him, my stomach tightening in knots as we headed in the direction of his black BMW SUV. “Dr. Brewer, I don’t mean to, uh, question you, but why are we making a house call? Wouldn’t an ambulance be dispatched? I just don’t—” He let out a sharp sigh, spinning around to face me, his six-foot-frame towering over my five-foot-seven one. “Listen, Dr. Preston, sometimes there’s a gray area that we have to operate in—and if you’re not okay with it, then you say so and you can just go the fuck home. I don’t have time. You’ve proven that you’re a competent doctor and person. I need you to either get on the damn bus or go the hell home.” My mouth dropped open, pure shock rolling through my body at the tone in his voice. “Uh...Okay.” I don’t know what drove me to get in the car, even though all the rules and policies were screaming in my head to just turn around. But instead, I opened the passenger door and climbed in. The scent of evergreen was nearly overwhelming as I shut the door and buckled my seatbelt. Dr. Brewer did the same, started the engine, and then took off like a rocket toward the exit. What the hell am I getting into? “Listen,” he began, his eyes focused on the road. “What you’re going to see is going to be ugly and complicated. You’re going to have a lot of questions, I’m sure.” He eyed me through his dark rimmed glasses. “But this is an arrangement that I have, and I have to live up to it. I’m getting older, and you’re the one who’s supposed to take my spot. You’re doing a damn good job, and that’s why it’s time for me to not take this on alone anymore.” I nodded, but honestly, his words weren’t registering at all. It was as if he was spitting out a foreign language—but as much as I wanted to demand answers... I also had way too much respect for Dr. Brewer. He was one of the best I had worked with, and he was so passionate about what he did in the ER. So, I stayed quiet as we drove out of town a couple of miles before finally pulling up to what appeared to be... Oh shit. “No, no,” I immediately spoke up. “What the hell are we doing at some outlaw biker clubhouse? I’ve heard horrible things—” “No questions, Dr. Preston,” he cut me off, shooting me a look I couldn’t quite make out. As soon as the car was in park, he flung open his door. The smell of booze, smoke, and marijuana filled the air. Jesus. I took a chokingly deep breath and followed him, noticing the haste in his steps. The slight sound of music filled the air as my Nikes crunched on the gravel and then pounded up the wood stairs.
