Completed Series By Kacey Lee Chained Sneak Peak Acknowledgments Chapter One Serena Warmth and light. It was everywhere. My wide child eyes stared at me in the mirror, absorbing my fiery red hair which had lightened some from all the hours spent playing in the sun. My skin had extra freckles from the time spent outside too. I bit my lip as I tried not to giggle, peeling my eyes from my reflection, and my tiny hands grazed along the hand carved wood of my mother’s jewelry box. It told a story; one my mom had told me over and over again despite her exasperation. I could hear her now. “Again?” She sighed as she tucked me into bed. “Why is it that you love to hear about such dark times?” I never answered because I didn’t know why I was so drawn to what drove humans and angels from Earth—the demons. I shouldn’t be as fascinated with them as I was, but I couldn’t help feeling there was something there I needed to understand. Or someone. It was absurd and didn’t make sense. I should be terrified of them. Instead, I made my mom recount the fight, the one carved into her jewelry box and that ended the world. Gently, I unlatched the hook and opened the case to reveal mama’s most prized necklace. My father gave it to her before he died in the war. It was a silver chain and from it hung the most dazzling red jewel. Picking it up, I peered into its depths, the light hitting the gem in ways that brought out the rich oranges and yellows. It reminded me of my hair and fire. Sometimes I imagined it was a flame that had gone dark when the war ended. There was a light buzz against the skin of my fingertips where they grazed along the warm-toned hues. It was said that when a demon’s power was drawn out, their husk became a burning ember. The door opened behind me, drawing me from my focus. I dropped the necklace back in the box and slammed it shut before spinning around to face my mother. Her auburn curls were the first thing I saw as she stuck her head in. “Sere—” My eyes blinked open. The dream was already slipping away, along with the feeling of home, of security, and secrets that seemed to elude me. My foggy mind tried to grasp at the familiar tendrils, but the more reality set it, the more it slipped through my fingers. My body hummed with energy, the remnants of sleep dissipating, and was coupled with a soreness between my legs. My nerve endings still buzzed from Laz’s touch from the night before, from how his power caressed me and the blissful waves of ecstasy when he fed from me. No, no, no. I couldn’t get wrapped up in this man. The man who came to save me, who was ready to let the world burn when he thought I was dead. My lower regions tingled with the thought. Fuck, I had to admit it was pretty damn hot. And I was done denying myself what I wanted. Him. The Demon Lord. Son of Lucifer. The air vibrated with immense power, swelling to where my breath was sucked out of me a split second before the door burst inward. The handle buried into the wall from the force. I shot up, pulling the sheet over my bare chest. “Wh—what is it?” My hands shook from the immense power radiating from Laz. His eyes were red as his demon threatened to surface. His face was sharp, the planes of his face darker, as the flickering fire casted shadows across it. He wore only boxer briefs that hung closely over the V of his hips, giving me a drool-worthy display of the corded muscles that grooved across his torso like a marble sculpture. With a flick of his wrist, a paper arcs through the air to land face down on my lap. I blinked at it, trying to understand what would make him so mad. Could it be another threat? Was Knox reneging on his deal somehow? What if something happened to Az or Neferia? With a deep breath, I picked it up. My eyes scanned the document. It was medical, showing erythrocyte count, leukocyte count, and assortment of other biology specific terminology. Then it hit me. It was information on a blood sample, and at the bottom in bold letters it read, “Race: Unknown.” This . . . this was my blood. I froze, staring at the words as they rang through my head. My muscles didn’t work, I couldn’t think. Fuck, fuck, fuck! “You truly are something else.” Laz’s voice was filled with such power that it made me dizzy. “You are not a Supe. You are something that hasn’t existed in this world for a long time.” I swallowed hard. “I can explain.” The words were almost inaudible in my rising panic. What should I tell him? How could I explain this? After last night, how could he not figure it out?
