Her dark brown hair still sat high in an updo after a busy eight-hour workday. She hadn’t finished her tasks, but it wasn’t like she had much else to do. Working as Michael’s personal assistant could be tiring, but after three years she had the hang of pretty much everything. She knew exactly how he liked his coffee (milky and sweet). She could recall what days required a pick-up at the dry cleaners. She even knew some of the company’s best secrets. The company that Michael had built from the ground up, and as each year went by, more money and more contracts came flooding in. Another yearly brand-new car for Michael and a generous bonus for his staff. Laura grinned to herself as she finished the last bit of admin for the day and packed away her empty lunch container as she grabbed her coat and headed towards the exit. Another day, another dollar, Laura thought as she headed out of the tired office doors and into her even more tired car. The rust starting to show on the door caught her eye as she scrunched her eyebrows together and tried to ignore it. That’ll have to wait, her thoughts hummed as she turned up the radio and headed back home. “Honey, I’m home!” Laura shouted to her housemate, Katie, as she entered the small but nice, semi-detached house in the city suburbs. Laura was lucky enough to own the house but having a tenant really helped things financially, plus she liked the company. Katie also loved to cook, which was a real bonus, kinda like having a girlfriend but without any drama or sadly, any sex. “Hey, girl! I made chicken curry. Do you want some?” Katie said as she grabbed the bottle of wine from the fridge and filled a glass to pass straight to Laura. A natural reaction to the end of a long day. “Yes! I’m starving. Thank you for that,” Laura grinned as she took the cold, fruity wine and slowly pressed her lips to the glass, enjoying the sweet aroma. “You are so welcome. How was work? How was sexy Michael?” Katie scrunched up her nose and chuckled. “Ah, work was fine! Ugh, he’s such a player. Don’t waste your time!” “Laura, you’re a lesbian, you don’t get it. He’s like the sexiest man I have EVER seen,” Katie laughed. “I guess you’re right, but he’s still a total player.” She shrugged her shoulders as she enjoyed another mouthful of wine. Laura only had eyes for women, but that didn’t make her blind to her boss’s dating habits. “Have you heard anything else from Tasha?” Katie raised her eyebrows and smirked. “Well, like I said, the first date was fine, but I don’t think there’s a spark for me. I need some connection, you know?” Laura rolled her eyes and slumped on the kitchen chair. “Aw, she looked hot though. Maybe you should go on another date with her?” “Um, I’m not sure. She texts me a lot and it’s kinda suffocating,” Laura sighed. “One minute you want love and romance, the next minute you have no idea. I think you just need a bit of fun,” Katie said as she shrugged her shoulders. “I think you’re right, but I don’t think that will be enough for her,” Laura said as she refilled her wine. “Mmm, maybe not! Not to rub it in but I’m going to Dave’s later.” “Oh, is that big sexy Dave? Or little nerdy Dave?” Laura squinted as it was becoming increasingly hard to keep up with Katie’s love life. “Big sexy Dave! I do like little Dave though.” “I can’t keep up with you,” Laura said as she laughed and shook her head. “You’re just living life and I love it.” “Well, babe, we’re not twenty-five forever,” Katie nodded as she topped up her glass and started to dish out some bowls of curry. “Very true,” Laura sighed as she pondered about her online dating app, her hands casually brushing over her phone screen. Maybe I should log back in, she thought to herself. She squinted her eyes as she opened the app and saw a bunch of unread messages. Well, it could be a fun night after all. Laura stretched her legs out beneath the covers, enjoying the feeling of freshly shaved legs on fresh, crisp bedsheets. After Katie left to meet big sexy Dave, Laura decided it was self-care time. She grabbed her phone and started to read through some of her messages on the dating app. Oooh, she is HOT, Denise, what a strong name, Laura’s internal thoughts were her only company lately. Hiyaaaa, I love getting drunk on the weekend, laughing, raving and smoking weed. Here for a good time, not a long time. xxx Laura rolled her eyes as she flicked back to her messages to see if anyone else caught her eye. Hey, you are absolutely beautiful! I’d love to know more about you – Shay Her thumb tentatively pressed the screen as a smiled beamed over Laura’s face. She took a closer look at Shay’s profile. The first thing she noticed was how deep and blue her eyes looked. “Surely that’s a filter,” Laura said aloud as she flicked through her photos. Shay looked quite sporty, with thick, dark brown hair, so dark it almost looked black. The contrast between her hair and eyes was striking. So much so, Laura decided to message her back. Hey! You are very sweet. What would you like to know? – Laura She hit send and smirked
