Today was the bake sale at Good Folks Housing Co-op. Emerald was now twenty-five. She had been at the Co-op since after high school graduation. Her parents, had done some kind Of suicide pact and overdosing on heroin. Em had nowhere to go and family did not step up. Her friends listened to her problems but did not offer space in their houses. She found an ad For the co-op at the local Wawa, and after much paperwork and many interviews with the Founding members of the Co-op... She was admitted due to hardship. Emerald was in charge Of the kitchen and cooking breakfasts for the other four tenants. Once a month, she made The baked goods for the big sale in the back of Good Folks. The bake sale was for the General maintenance of the house. Painting, a new microwave, and new kitchen chairs. Many of the purchases were made at the Goodwill down the block. Life was challenging For Emerald with no real family to help out. She sold her landscape paintings from the Little gallery in the hallway of the Co-op. She painted in the sunny afternoons without distraction. The other tenants had part-time jobs and were trying to move on. Housing was not specific. The tenants could stay as long as they liked. As a non-profit there were just a few rules. No overnight guests and no drugs or alcohol permitted in the house. ************************************************************************ TWO. Emerald was adopting a little black weak stray cat. The director of the Co-op personally Took the cat to the Vet for his shots, and everything was now a go to keep Mingo. Emerald found the cat at the dumpster of her Wawa store as she was walking in for a hoagie. It just kept looking at her and crying. How could she refuse the little creature? Emerald carried little Mingo all the way back to the Co-op. Everyone was petting it and giving lots of love. Maybe Mingo would help her conquer her fears and late- night restlessness. The same dream sequence night after night was very difficult for Emerald. It wasn’t really a bad dream. Just a mysterious one. As she kept seeing a woman Wearing a yellow rain slicker staring out a window at the pouring rain. Just as the woman was about to turn around, Emerald would wake up startled and sweating. She had to put these strange thoughts out of her mind and set up for the Noon bake sale. A community bake sale was a way to connect with people. It forced Emerald to be sociable. **************************************************************************** THREE. Skye was hauling a fender out to the back of Corey’s Collision Center. She worked there part-time as a “hauler.” Her arms were all built- up From hauling doors, fenders, and pieces of metal to the large dump truck in the back yard. Then, she and her boyfriend, Guy, would take them to Jake’s Junkyard. Jake had gotten The couple a place to live on the outskirts of the junkyard. Guy did a lot of odds and ends For Jake, as he was an elderly grumpy collector of metal junk. Jake managed to make a living from people’s broken- down and smashed up cars. Skye was thrilled to be around the mechanics. She contemplated going to the local tech school for a mechanic’s certification. Maybe she could eventually work at the BMW store down the block. For now, she did Her part at Corey’s, and collected her paychecks for the vocational school. ***************************************************************************** FOUR. Skye and Guy had been together a few years. It was
