CHAPTER 1 My body tingled as Daryn’s lips moved over mine. While I had been in love before, I had never felt this all-consuming hunger for another man. While I could feel his arousal pressing against me, it was nothing compared to the emotions shared through our bond. His desire swamped me. Cascading over my skin like a velvet storm and my breath hitched in my throat before I reluctantly pulled away. “You didn’t answer my question?” His smile and glowing blue eyes could ensnare any woman, and that he looked at me like that when he hadn’t considered a relationship since the death of his wife made me feel special. “I wasn’t avoiding answering you. I’m just thankful you said yes. Not to being a hunter. I appreciate your willingness to become one of us and once you have been fully trained, and we get started on your antique shop, we will work out a schedule that addresses both our needs.” “You realize I’m going to be the oldest rookie at the training facility?” I teased. “You will do your training in the field with my team and me. Indego is better suited for hand-to-hand combat training, as she is an elite hunter. Though she has half the body mass, she uses her magic to boost her strength when needed.” “She is pretty amazing. I really like her...” My words trailed off as I lost myself in his intense gaze. I ran my hand over the stubble on his jaw. The course hairs rubbed against my palm and I marveled at how attractive he was. “I had no idea the bond would be like this,” he whispered. I chuckled. “Me either. It’s hard to separate our emotions at times like this. It’s a little distracting.” Daryn sighed. “That’s the reason couples train before bonding. Distraction can get us both killed. I am confident in my ability to protect you while you learn to be a cohesive part of our team, but your magic seems exponential. You are not like a rookie who is new to their powers.” I nibbled my lip. “I feel like I am. I have barely used my powers since I left Spirit Falls and every time I turn around, it seems I have a new one.” He touched my cheek. “You were forced from this town because someone either feared what you would become or they knew about your connection to the Book of the Gods. Maybe it was both. They needed you to retrieve the book so they couldn’t kill you, and they wanted to ensure you didn’t learn to harness your power. You have me and my team to get you through the learning curve, but don’t be afraid to fall back on your magic. Judging by what Hecate said, you have powers we are yet to discover.” “Great,” I said, but my response lacked enthusiasm. “To answer your earlier question, I would like you to take the oath as soon as possible. As soon as the oath binds you to my team, your tattoo will form. It will be identical to ours and you will have the ability to speak with any member of the team. As I’m the source of the connection, I am the only one who can create a private link, but once I teach you to use the link, you can speak with any member of the team at all times.” “Can you speak to other teams?” “Yes, but only because I am the current source of the hunter link. Nobody else can maintain the network, so until my successor emerges, I am the only one to cross-link.” I rubbed my temple. “So, you are to the hunters what I am to the breach map. Either of us dies, well, we both die, so the council loses its security system and its communications. That wouldn’t be devastating at all,” I said sarcastically. Daryn pulled me closer to his body. The soft comforter cocooned me in warmth, and I inhaled the light scent of fabric softener as I lay my head on his chest. “Lochlan is concerned about the same thing. We are stronger together and honestly, the hunter link was created centuries ago. We could still coordinate our teams using modern technology as human military teams do, but we cannot replace the breach map. It is the power source for the gates. We lose you before there is a successor, and this world will be overrun with demon scum.” My fingers traced his defined pectoral muscle. “The oath sounds like it’s more than just saying you want to become a hunter.” His hand moved over my head
