I didn’t like sitting in some conference room after my father had been dead less than seventy-two hours. I didn’t like feeling out of place among my siblings—we hadn’t talked much over the past two years, even before my father’s death. And now … there was this gaping hole in my heart. In disbelief, I listened to the words coming out of my sister’s mouth as she read our father’s letter. “Dear Mia and boys, If you’re reading this, something went wrong. Well, it was probably my heart. I knew it was going out on me. And you’re probably mad I didn’t tell you. But let the old man have one last say, would you? Listen up. To get your shares in the company, here’s what you have to do: Mia, since you have Mr. Charm, I need you to relocate and run the company for one year. I’m sorry about this. I know you and Ross like the ranch. Tell Kinley I’m sorry, too. Maybe she’ll like New York. Boys, here are your instructions: 1. Leave the company for one year. 2. Leave all your belongings behind. 3. Go to some anonymous town. 4. Don’t be a Jagger. 5. Fall in love.” Chapter 1 Alex Three months had passed since my father’s death, and I had no intention of following his ridiculous instructions—disappear somewhere and fall in love. Pfft. That would never happen. I’d been in love before. I’d been married, Sarah, and had my precious daughter, Jane, but now they were both gone. I was the only Jagger sibling who knew what love and loss actually meant, and the pain that came from it. No way was I going down that road again. I didn’t need the money. I couldn’t care less about getting my cut of the business, and I’d told my father that when he’d tried to convince me to move back to New York. The memories there would haunt me. I couldn’t go back. While I had been working for the family company from Las Vegas, I’d also done commercial real estate. I had a small portfolio with property and buildings that paid the bills. It was growing. Slowly. All in all, I had done well for myself, though it was nothing compared to Jagger Enterprises. How could I compare my company and land holdings to what my father had built? It left me working with one of my father’s old friends, Steve Starks. Steve lived out in Boulder City, a small town next to the Hoover Dam. He owned a ranch near the town, and he had several hotels around there. We’d gotten to know each other, as he had plenty of hotels in Las Vegas as well. Over the past two years, he’d become a friend to me, showing me the ropes of the business and helping me find deals. Today, he’d reached out about a potential deal and asked if I’d want to partner with him on another ranch in Boulder City, this one about thirty minutes to the east. I’d driven to Steve’s home, and we’d planned on driving out to see the ranch until the owner canceled on us at the last minute. He’d told Steve he wasn’t selling. The entire trip felt like a waste, but Steve insisted we stop at the Hoover Dam and take a tour. “I wanted to spend time with you anyway,” Steve told me. “Plus, I wanted to brag about my recent helicopter purchase.” He grinned widely. “Did you know I learned how to fly in the military for rescue missions?” I had to laugh. “That’s cool.” He went on and on for the next twenty minutes about his purchase and how fast he could get us from Boulder City to Las Vegas if I wanted to try it. Only half listening, I informed him I had a car and didn’t want to go on the helo with him. Much to his dismay. When we arrived at the Hoover Dam, I stared at the vastness of it and sucked in a long breath. I’d driven by it and gawked before pulling my attention back to the road, but I’d never stopped for a tour. Now I couldn’t help but imagine how much manpower it had taken the nation to complete this project. Steve nudged me. “If you go on the tour, they will tell you that ninety-six men died building this. That’s a lot of people, eh?” I nodded. It was hard to
