Created with Vellum 1 Leah “What do you mean he’s not coming?” I say, pushing the train from my gown behind me. It’s my wedding day, I’ve been sitting in this dressing room for an hour, waiting to walk down the aisle. Ellie, my older sister, shuts the door to muffle out my screams. I’m devastated. I’ve been jilted. This chapel is packed with family members from both sides. How could he do this to me? My mother comes bursting through the door, slamming it behind her. Her green eyes look like they are on fire. “What did you do?” She growls at me. Of course, this is all my fault. I did everything she told me to do and yet, here we are. I’m single, once again. “Mother, you did not come in here to blame this on me… I know you wouldn’t dare!” I spit out, my face stained with tears. I tug at my wedding gown, reaching over my shoulder as if I unzip this gown myself. Wrong again. I look at my sister Ellie, my face pleading. My mother pulls her phone out of her purse, going through her contacts to look for my fiancée’s number. “Call him Leah. Call him and beg him to show up.” My mother holds the phone out to me. “Get me out of this dress!” I shout. Ellie runs behind me and pulls on the zipper. “No! I don’t care if I see another man again mother. I’m sick of doing this to please you. It’s not working!” I growl at her. Once unzipped, I let the white gown fall off my shoulders. It stops at my waist, exposing my bra. My mother storms over to me and swipes her hand across my face. “You insolent little bitch!” She snarls, “You’ll call him now and fix this or consider yourself homeless!” I pull the dress down from my waist, crying. She’s still holding the phone out to me. “You can stay with me Leah.” Ellie tells me. My mother glares at her. “Ah, I see what this is. You conspired for her to go against me. Two daughters, I’ve wasted my life on for both of them to be gay! I want both of you out of here right now!” My mother storms towards the door. “And Leah, you have until noon tomorrow to get your shit out of my house, or I’m donating all of it!” Ellie pulls me into a hug, letting me sob on her shoulder. I feel like shit. Absolute shit. Ellie pulls away from me and grabs a short dress I was supposed to wear at the end of my reception. “Here, put this on and let’s get out of here.” I shake my head, putting my hands over my face, devastated. I can’t believe I was so stupid to try with my mother. Ellie helps me put on the dress, pack my bags, and pull me out of the room. I make the walk of shame out of the chapel, hurrying to her car. She tosses in my duffel bag and puts me in the passenger side, before getting in and driving off. We spend at least an hour driving through the city, trying to figure out where to go. “Please don’t tell me you were really sulking over that dude? Thankfully, it wasn’t your money wasted on that sham of a wedding. He knew you were gay and was still trying to marry you out of convenience. It’s a good thing he saw the light.” “But I’m supposed to be alone? Forever?” I say to her. I don’t know why I had some stupid shimmer of hope that I wasn’t going to spend the rest of my life alone. Even if it was a marriage of convenience. I’ve had the worst luck with women. I don’t know what it is about me. I pull the pins from my hair, letting my long curls fall down my back. “I’m just glad you’re out of there.” Ellie tells me. “But I can’t just stay with you. I don’t have a job, and you have a life of your own.” Ellie turns into Greektown once we hit downtown Detroit. She pulls in front of an old night club that was once St. Andrews, that has been re-opened by a new company. “Thirst trap?” Ellie laughs. I look out my window, seeing it’s nearly dark. The doors to the night club open. Two large security guards walk out. “Well, I guess it’s better than St. Andrews. Let’s go in.” Ellie suggests pulling off. She finds us a parking space in an old parking lot. “A night club? That’s the last place I want to go.” I say when Ellie pulls me out of the car. She tugs on my dress, adjusting it, then fluffs out my curls. She pulls some wet napkins out of her purse and cleans my runny makeup. “You need to get laid. A one-night stand will clear your mind.” She grabs my arms and pulls me to the night club. When we get there, I’m surprised to see there’s already a long line of beautiful women. “Wow, that was fast.” I mutter. “These clubs fill up fast. Come on, let’s get in line. Maybe we’ll get you someone before you even get in the building.” She teases. As we move past the door, a guard steps forward. “You two, go on in.” Ellie pauses and looks at the man for a moment. Wait, do they
